In celebration of the freakishly swealtering hot air, these photos will hopefully remind us of days that you can actually walk around your favorite city with comfort, ease and with plenty of air to go around for everyone.

All dated Friday, July 28, 2006 except for some at the end.

Just for visitors, these donuts are filled with bullets instead of jelly.

I've always heard the negativity surrounding Detroit, but in these photos the city looks awesome! A good mix of modern buildings and urban grit, and obviously quite a good mix of nationalities as well!

Thanks for that walking tour. I'm so jealous I wasn't there for that! :)

"Just for visitors, these donuts are filled with bullets instead of jelly...."

I don't get this comment in the beginning...seems kinda negative to me; it's kind of a contradiction of the photo tour...but I'll forgive you your transgression since you did a wonderful job on the photos.

I guess I let my witt get away from me. It was suppose to have read in the most light-hearted, sarcastic, witty kind of tone. I guess I gave myself an excuse to say it because I live in Detroit. :)

nashscan, I didn't go to Casino Windsor.

I'm not sure what is becoming of the old casinos. Actually, Greetown will keep theirs because it is in Trapper's Alley. It will expand it operations on-site. The same with Motor City Casino. The hotel tower is being built adjacent to the current temp complex, then the casino will be expanded at the current space it uses in the old bread company building. There is a lot of expansion already built up, but I don't have any photos of it.

The only casino completely relocating is MGM, just north and west of where the temp one is. Rumor has it that a governmental agency that is looking for downtown "campus-like" space might move there. It's decently marketable since it has ample parking already, and who knows, maybe because the casino makes so much money, they will be willing to sell it for a deal. :)

That's OK. I think most of us use the Detroit "Muscle" every now and then...either for wit or influence.

I'm embarrassed to say that I'm guilty of using it for influence a few months back when my mom was near death in an insulin coma in a crap-hole of a hospital in the middle of "Smalltown, USA" about 600 miles southwest of Detroit.

My husband and I got into an argument with the ER doctor who wouldn't cooperate with us on getting her transferred to a much bigger and better hospital with specialists about an hour's drive away.

I finally had to tell him..."Don't make me get all Detroit up on your ass!" (Exactly what I meant by that, I don't know.) :whistling:

But hey, it worked  ...He shut up and left the room...in 15 minutes a nurse came into Mom's room with paperwork for us to sign because an ambulance was there to move her out.

I find that most small towns are scared of "big city folk".

(By the way, Mom is fine now.) :yahoo:

Mich, first off those are wonderful photos. You've really caught the life of the city well too. I always love how Detroiter's seem to like to have their pictures taken. I've always been asked by random people if they can be in my shots. Some of them come out really good, I feel bad not being able to send to them.

Haha BarGal, we do the same up here 90 miles north in Saginaw (Sagnasty). As the number of homicides in the city began to triple, some people started printing these shirts "Come back to Saginaw, we MISSED you the first time" The shirt had a smoking pistol and animated bullet holes thorugh them. They were giving them out free, and a ton of people have them now (including myself). I know, it's really terrible......
