What are your favorite Southern riverfront & waterfront cities?

One exception would be Columbia. This is largely due to the riverfront land being privately owned; however, there are some big plans for the underutilized waterfront. The master plan for USC's research campus call for major development along the riverfront, including a riverfront park (which would be the city's largest), an amphitheatre, bike paths, and a new baseball stadium for USC's baseball team.

I really hope Columbia is able to transform their riverfront, because those plans looks great, and in its current shape, I can't exactly say it looks nice. I would think the transformation of that area could turn out to be a very positive for Columbia.

Surprised that nobody mentioned the Riverwalk. It's the big reason San Antonio's the top tourist destination in the Southwest.

The Riverwalk really didn't do much for me. I like San Antonio, and thought the Riverwalk was nice, but it just didn't do it for me. You explore it once and see some of the nearby shops, and that's about it.

Wow, Greenville looks beautiful! I love the natural waterslide!

And double wow for Columbia! I wish we'd get our act together and get more popping like that... those plans for Ft. Worth look great too!

Well just when you thought us Richmonders would go away with our river... here I be. So I am biased. We love our river... we have others nearby in the metro (Chickahominy, Pamunkey, Appomattox to name a few since Hanover County has several smaller rivers within it) but the James is our darling right through the city!

So I've selected just a few of my pictures... I'm a river rat... I have tons of pictures by the river and I've walked almost the entire bank in and across downtown... with the camera in tow.

But just a few...

One of my favorite views in an area formerly and coming back known as Rocketts. I have numerous sunset pics from here... not the best but one of the ones I got my hands on quickly.

Then there's our little "beach."

As for waterside... well if people count Maryland as southern, I like Baltimore.

That is truly an amazing plan for Columbia. How long until buildout?

Oh we're looking at 20 years at the least. It's all a part of the master plan for USC's research campus. The white low rise buildings in proximity to the riverfront development will all be a part of the campus (which is under construction right now). The ballpark is supposed to start construction in the fall; I'd expect to see more development once that gets underway.

Those people are going to contract diseases through that water.
