Okay, I'll admit it. Even though I've moved a gazillion times over the past 20 years, I have yet to find a fool-proof, painless way to move. I've tried different moving companies, but each one has managed to mar or destroy something. I don't know anyone with a large truck, and I hate to ask people to help with such a huge task.

Has anyone found a way to accomplish a seamless transition? Is there such a thing?

Declutter like mad! And I mean be ruthless...if you haven't used it in the last 12 months, you won't use it in the next 12 months. And don't think "yard sale"; GIVE the stuff away, either to friends or Goodwill. There are people in our community who can USE that extra frying pan/pair of Keds/copy of The House of Mirth/seldom-worn trenchcoat/mis-matched saucers. Don't hang onto stuff you're not using--bad feng shui.

And please don't give up on moving companies...there are good ones out there. Moving is right up there on the list of traumatic experiences in one's life; spare yourself some grief.

At work I'm putting my two weeks tomorrow, asking for letters of recommendation from my SM and DMs. I'm leaving for Shaumburg, IL sometime later this month. It's really hard for me because I'm the type of person that has to do recon before jumping into something, just incase the water was to deep or to cold and I need an exit point. I'm mostly worried about this foreign place and not finding work. The move of my stuff is easy --- just going to throw it in the back of my girls Escort... Today I plan on decluttering my closets. I have been greatly helped by my ma who has donated space at her place to store stuff that is important to stay here in GR as its family related -- old photos mostly.

Rizzo's going to miss GR. I'm told that on a good day I can get B93.7 on the dial. I can not stand country, but it sure would be nice to hear some GR.

Well... that bad feng shui really explains a lot. I still have boxes upon boxes that I haven't opened in years.

No wonder things are this way.

I have two exams next weekend. After that, I'll start pitching. (Pitching a fit, and pitching old crap.)

I do have a box that I've been filling up w/clothes to give away to In the Image.

Rizzo no longer in GR? I don't think I like that thought. :(

As far as I know, I will be in Chicagoland for a long time. I should be back in GR once a month via the Pere Mark line and grabing a room at the AGP. It a sad one, but it's that stupid milestone crap in ones life.

Thought you were going to have a wedding at the Ford Museum?!? Is this your engagement present, she gets a job in Chicagoland?

Schaumberg is the most extreme edge city I've ever spent two weeks in. They have a tacky mall nestled by a freeway with--get this--a multi-story parking deck designed to look like a downtown!

(At the time I was there, I made the choice to not pick up and move to Chicago from the Detroit area. Instead I subscribed to GR mag, and eventually got here.)

My best idea: start loading up on boxes (from the HBA area of Meijer) weeks in advance. Number them with big ol' magic markers. As you load them with off-season stuff (sweaters, long underwear, boots, fleece afghans, holiday stuff) keep a running list on the 'puter.

I've gotten this going with my fabric stash, which stays in boxes, and it really helps.

The idea of de-cluttering and getting rid of stuff towards the thrifts is good, except for my tendency to bring more back than I unload. (And the Brads keep saying I should get a place in Union Square. Not gonna happen, with the bicycle problem and the fabric problem and the Red Hat problem.)

One of my best moves entailed hiring a small local mover with a large truck. It took place on a mid-week day and helped a lot; they moved all the large heavy things. (I am able to lift and move almost everything by myself, but that gets tiring after a couple days of it.)

Memo to self: go hit the Y and work out a lot as much as possible for the next couple of weeks.

No, the both of us intend on a wedding at Ford. This will be a temp move. I won't settle for Chicago, or anywhere else for that matter. I'm pretty friggin conservative/tenaciously unwilling/settled if you ask me and I think it was her eyes that got me this far.

Ah, but I have the thrifts come pick my stuff up. That way I won't be tempted.

Re the boxes: I really lucked out there. My employer moved from downtown GR out to Cascade, and I was the beneficiary of tons of boxes used for the move. That was the only good thing about the move, believe me.

What's with the fabric and red hat?

The internet my friend, makes everything better. I'm so far away and even still I only listen to Grand Rapids radio stations. The power of the internet is amazing.

Of course my girlfriend was annoyed and said "you're sooo obsesed with Grand Raaaapids, Grand Raaapids this, and Grand Rapids that...!" I says, "That's our home girlfriend."
