Crime in the immediate vicinity isn't bad at all. The CBD itself doesn't have a high amount of crime. About the worst thing you'll usually see is petty vandalism, a purse-snatching or panhandling.

great thread and thanks for the in depth information. Is Vine Street the main street through downtown? I'll be driving up to Detroit this summer, and I'm definately going to take a quick detour of I-75 and so I can see this beautiful city for myself.

thelakelander...Vine St. is the main street through pretty much all of the city, yes. If you come, get off of I-75 at Second St. and go east until you hit Vine. Vine is northbound-only through the CBD.
