Richmond: Economy/Business/Real Estate

It looks like LandAmerica will be acquired by Fidelity National per this Yahoo article. This probably explains why they laid off about 125 IT workers this week at the Henrico HQ. I worked here for a number of years before relocating to CLT. Very sad to see and I'd imagine this probably doesn't bode well for the remaining employees, many of whom I stay in regular contact with. :(

John Adams, Chairman and CEO of The Martin Agency was presented with a prestigeous award. He and the advertising agency have "lifted the standing of Richmond and Virginia in international commerce."

Advertising Age's listing of top 10 ranks Martin 3rd in the US.

Tough day for news on the Richmond economy but perhaps there will be a silver lining. Instead of Chesterfield, Richmond, and Henrico, all trying to tackle things separately, maybe it's time they saw the advantage of working as a single unit when it comes to issues such as transportation, jobs, and a regional identity. Squabbling between counties and the City will only put us at a disadvantage over other metros when it comes to attracting new business.

You are certainly right about that RIC75. I think we need to have the GA look at redoing the borders of the counties and cities in this state. I would like to see it like most states do with for in example the city of atlanta is ran and operated by Fulton County. I think a set up like that would really help and it seems to work well for most cities that are set up like that.

Circuit City is filing for bankruptcy; Qimonda is laying off personnel, and the purchase of Land America which started life as Lawyers Title Insurance on Main Street are a few of the bad news stories.

But here's an upbeat report about AAA and Mobil hotel/restaurant ratings. For its size, Richmond has an amazinge number of four and five-star properties.

There seems to be no end of bad business news in Richmond. Now, it's revealed that Altria plans lay-offs.

And exactly what is the story with Altria's PMUSA? Is PM or is it not importing 2000+ employees from Carabus, NC to work at its huge cigarette factory on I-95 south of Richmond?

Bad news is everywhere these days unforunately... With regard to PM, I believe it's more like ~500 employees that are transferring. I know that PM offered a transfer to less than half of the people at the Carrabus Co. plant. A large chunk have either left the company or will be laid off sometime early next year.

Richmond's economy is faltering badly. There are bright spots such as the doubling of Fort Lee's facilities and population, but overall the region is ailing. It is not alone among America's cities suffering through recession, if that is any consolation.

Be warned: This story compiled by John Reid Blackwell at the Richmond Times Dispatch is depressing reality.

There is hope for some recovery in late 2009 or 2010, but will Richmond ever regain its Fortune 1000 standing?

Thoughts from those more knowledgeable and upbeat would be most welcome!

Here's a good read from Richmond.com. Seems a lot of folks are snapping up deals on housing in the City and the metro-area overall seems doing well in these tough times. I would expect the City's overall sales to be lower than the counties just based on the total number of units but Richmond is hanging in there. Wonder if that means that as a percentage, more units are being sold here in the City?

Senor Ricardo Pliego of Mexico has purchased 30.3 million shares of Circuit City at a bargain price. The Latin gentleman own an enormous appliance business south of the border and his personal wealth is $6.3 billion.

If he buys Circuit City, maybe he'll maintain a North American headquarters in El Ciudad de Richmondo. :)
