Richmond: Economy/Business/Real Estate

The United Network for Organ Sharing, a/k/a UNOS, is expanding into a nearby building that has been vacant for nearly two years.

The rather attractive 51,700 s/f Jackson Center across from The Hippodrome on North 2nd Street is only 18 years old. It's a surprise (to me) to learn it hasn't had recent tenants. I thought it had been built by the City in an effort to enhance Jackson Ward and had been occupied by a city governmental bureau.

Anyway, UNOS is out-growing its relatively new headquarters at 4th and Jackson Streets and has purchased Jackson Center. Move-in of about 50 workers could begin in September.

Its a nice address all right - but its actually the most expensive in one of 40 regions around the country (so its 34th if you only count the most expensive in each region). Its a little vague in the article, one of the comments clarified this point. I'm not sure how they define the region -

Officials in Metro Richmond should be very worried about this Metropolitan Employment (August 2011) ranking. Among 100 Metro areas, Richmond comes in 96th in job loss percentages between August 2010 and August 2011 according to The Business Journal. That's appalling. http://www.bizjourna...ype==

I am really surprised to see the Metro losing jobs but also realize that Richmond was not affected nearly as much by the recession as most other cities, therefore, we do not need as much of a recovery as others near the top of this list.

EDIT: Here is where they acquired their data.

People lined up early at stores in Richmond selling the new IPhones.

From today's RTD:

http://www2.timesdis...day-ar-1383753/

I notice a commenter writes that he hopes the lines move fast so people can get back to their "Occupy Richmond" protests. That's the first mention of local participation I have seen in the Richmond press, although contributor Oaktowntwinz says that he has seen TV newscasts about protesters in Richmond.

Robin Miller and Dan Gecker of Urban Design Associates have purchased one of the most attractive ante bellum houses in Shockoe Bottom.

It is The Pace-King house at 205 North 19th Street (between Grace and Broad Streets).

The developers plan to refurbish the house and its dependences into office space and apartments.

14th Street, which in my mind is the dividing line between Shockoe Slip and Shockoe Bottom, seems to me to have been in the news quite a bit of late.

Ledbury, the high-end shirt shop moved recently to the street.

PUNCH, an advertising shop in Carytown will be taking space at 117 South 14th soon.

It's a shame nothing has taken over the old Southern Rail Road building across the street since the deli moved out.

Meanwhile, further east, a firm called Big River is expanding in the Edgeworth Building in Tobacco Row (click the highlighted "changes" at end of the story.)

Good Lord -- how did I miss this?

Health Diagnostic Labratories will bring 653 new workers to Richmond's downtown BioTechnical Park in two phases of expansion. 350 are already employed there and in a couple of years the total number is expected to be 950 workers.

I found the RTD news release about Health Diagnostic Lab's expansion plans for the downtown BioTech Park.

Did you jnow that there is an 85' foot height limitation in the area? City officials had to adjust the limit to 100 feet in order for the firm to demolish existing buildings on Jackson between 5th and 6th Streets (also known as Navy Hill Way) and erect two new buildings.

Great news for Richmond and the Biotech Park. Thanks for posting the link to that story, Burt. I wonder how tall the Phillip Morris Building is? I'd be curious to see how these will stack up next to it. Either way, here are the renderings pulled from the article linked above:

Chmura Economics & Analytics group originally forcast job growth in the region of 75,000 over the next ten years before taking into account the impact expected from Amazon hirings and effects of the huge Road World Championship cycling race in 2015. They now anticipate higher job growth in the next decade.

I can't understand this Brookings Institute ranking, listing Richmond as the 10th least dynamic metropolitan area in the world. Based on population growth, diversity of industry and building growth, how could it POSSIBLY be ranked lower than MOST of the cities in the Rust Belt? Somebody's gonna need to decipher this thing for me.....
