Richmond: Economy/Business/Real Estate

Of course it wouldn't take a detective to find that RVA's economy isn't all dependent on the government. The Fourtune 500, retail, tourism, all these have a much underestimated part of RVA'S economy. It is sad when a city has been bestowed such a position as "Least Dynamic", especially when that city promotes creativity and innovtation!!

I'm not an economist so I won't embarass myself by interpreting this article. However, I don't think this is as bad as you guys think. I was surprised to see the Richmond metro included in this group of cities because Brookings surveyed the 200 largest metros in the WORLD. Richmond wasn't the lowest, that would be Athens. Richmond was tenth from the bottom but in good company, such as Barcelona and Madrid. They aren't saying Richmond isn't a dynamic city, they are saying that Richmond's economy hasn't been on par with Shanghai which was #1. Being included in this survey tells me Richmond's status in the world is actually growing. The glass is not half empty!!!

Capital One's acquisition of ING GROEP NV, which was approved yesterday by The Fed Reserve, has to be good news for Richmond in one way or another. It will be the nation's 5th largest bank in deposits. Thousands of new workers will be hired.

I suspect the bank headquarters will be in McLean, but it's not unreasonable to imagine a healthy spill-over in Metro Richmond.

I still don't understand why Cap. One's HQ is in McLean, someone told me at work that the campus we worked on (the West Creek campus) was where the majority of the company's operations are handled. Almost as if McLean's office is just a secondary sideline... they should just settle and say RVA is the HQ.... but of course it's just my fantasizing that will only keep the dream alive :tough:

Harrison & Bates is a locally owned affiliate of Grubb & Ellis. They could always change affiliation if things continue to deteriorate at Grubb. H&B is a 3rd party firm, so they don't have real estate holdings. Thus, it shouldn't have much of an impact on the local CRE market.

Tumblr is reporting success in it's secondhand location in Manchester across the river from downtown :)

http://www2.timesdispatch.com/business/business/2012/feb/27/tdmbiz08-popular-blogging-platform-tumblr-finds-a--ar-1717866/

The staff is super efficient, productive, but most of all, creative (hint, hint  )

It is the only office outside of it's NYC headquarters, which obviously means we're doing SOMETHING right ;)

New from todays RTD about the port of richmond. It seems like it is taking a second stint at business again. My aunts company ships all of her products that she manufactures out of the port of Richmond and sends it to Italy and Taiwan from chesterfield county

Centerpointe in Prince George County is 29 miles south of Richmond just off of I-295 and close to Ft. Lee and the Tri-Cities of Petersburg, Hopewell and Colonial Heights.

Rolls-Royce has an operation there with about 150 employees and is now discussing an expansion that would bring in another 140 high-paid workers.

The Greater Richmond Association for Commercial Real Estate gave its top award to The John Marshall Residences for project of the year.

Runners-up included three Shockoe Bottom buildings: Harvester Apartments; Hodges Partnership, and Southland Wine Lofts. Does anyone know anything about the Bottom projects, including their locations?

The famous Wyeth building off of 95 has switched ownership..... again.

The Rebkee Company, based in Midlothian, has handed it over to MICHAEL AND SON, an A/C manufacturing company based in Alexandria.

The owners are excited to have obtained such an (in)famous building, and right now he says he is willling to keep up the marquee letters on the side of the building.

Read about it in today's BizSense:

Note: Michael & Sons, while based in Alexandria, also has an office in Midlothian.

This is an interesting article in today's Times Dispatch concerning the growth in the number of apartments in downtown Richmond. 1,300 units have come online since 2010. Vacancy rates are only at 4.2%, and developers see no end in sight to the growth we are experiencing in the city. Good news for Richmond!

The number of residential units rising south of the James in Manchester is amazing.

Lucy Meade of Venture Richmond is quoted in this story saying that downtown population doubled between 2000 and 2010 to about 10,000. I bet a quarter it has picked up another 2,000 in the last two years.

Hopefully this spurs into more businesses coming to downtown and Manchester!
