It seems like Austin crime rate is rising. I always thought Austin was one of the safest places to live in the USA because of its intelligence.

 What are you talking about? Austin still has an incredibly low crime rate for a city of 700,000, particularly when speaking of violent crimes.

Here is a blurb from an article regarding Austin crime....

"Austin's crime rate is also in sharp contrast with that of other American cities its size, as other cities in the 500,000 to 1 million population bracket saw an 8.3 percent spike in violent crime since the end of 2004. In addition to the drop in violent crime, Austin property crime only increased by 0.7 percent, according to the reports - numbers that make Austin the third-safest city in the country, behind San Jose, Calif., and Honolulu, Hawaii, in total crime rates."

Austin is a relatively safe city, but like any other city, there are areas in Austin that you can get knocked off.
