Springfield is definitely more dangerous than Hartford. Having said that, you really don't feel like you are in danger unless you wander into areas you shouldn't be wandering into anyways. I'm originally from S. Windsor, but I went to college in Springfield and live in Downtown Springfield.

My point is, when you look at the rankings they scare the heck out of people when they shouldn't. Even in a rougher city like Springfield, you can walk around any part of downtown and feel safe. If you keep yourself out of the neighborhoods (and you can feel when you are entering a shady neighborhood) then you are going to be fine. Most people middle class people really have no business being in these neighborhoods anyway.
