Policom released their 2006 economic strength rankings for large metropolitan areas. A full explanation of the criteria is provided in the report. The South is well represented on this list:

I like that the Micropolitan area that I live in (Statesville-Mooresville) is ranked 15th and is located right next to the number 1 metropolitan.
