SCEG FAILS COLUMBIA

While its obvious that the majority of the bus routes are in Richland and that most homeless (and they aren't all vagrants) are in Richland, Lexington needs to at least make a proportional contribution to solving these issues. For instance, Lexington County leaders say they don't have any hard-and-fast numbers about the number of homeless in the county, so they're not making their contribution in relation to the homeless commission. There was a study done some time ago that gave a rough figure (as it is about impossible to get a real number, in either Richland or Lexington), so why did they not go by that number? Otherwise, county leaders need to fund their own study to get a number so that this process can be expedited. Sure, SCANA got off too easy, but since CMRTA also services Lexington County, Lexington has a responsibility there as well. Pat Smith, mayor of Springdale (where the airport is located) and president of the Transit Authority, is the worst. Lexington County needs to chip in their 15% since that's the percentage of routes located in Lexington County (primarily in W. Columbia, Cayce, and Springdale). In both of these instances, Lexington County leaders keep saying "We just need more information." I mean really, what else do they want? In both instances, they have numbers to go by. If they don't want to fund anything and just want to use their money to fund lawsuits about a redundant heart center or for infrastructure for the next big box store, they just say that. But don't pretend to act like you're concerned when you're not.

Lexington leaders simply want their constituents to go across the river to work, not realizing that if Columbia fails, the region fails--which means that Lexington County has a role to play in the success of Columbia because it ensures regional success. Lexington County is far from being the "powerhouse" it thinks it is. If the earth opens up and swallows Columbia today, Lexington County is DONE.

I think it would be more logical for them to pay based on the percentage of riders from Lexco, not percentage of routes.

And at the risk of beating a dead equine, Lexington County was not the entity that took on the buses from SCANA. Columbia made its bed, and they should lie in. Not Richland County, not Lexington County, not West Columbi, Cayce, or Springdale.

If you don't hold the leaders responsible for their actions, buffoonery such as the bus takeover will continue.

It's too late for the city to strike a deal with SCANA now. Yes they messed up, but not the entire region has to come together to find a solution; pointing at past mistakes doesn't help at all. Whatever bed Columbia is lying in is the same bed that Lexington County, Richland County, and all of their respective municipalities are lying in as well. Lexington County should at least consider the importance of the airport in deciding to partially fund the bus system. Hopefully county leaders will consider that when all involved entities are looking at a more permanent funding source.

Huh?

Nothing to do with SCANA or the bus sytem.

Do you see any problem with Lexco funding the bus system based on a percentage of riders? Seriously, I can see some logic to that, but not a percentage of bus routes.
