Jobs in Planning

Veloise

Recommended Posts

Michigan APA, Mich Twps, Michi Muni League. (This assumes that you'd want to stay here.)

Also, it can be helpful to set up some search thingies on the regular career builder-type ad sites.

Some planning programs have jobs boards. EMU is always sending out updates.

So go hit the UP forums where you might want to relocate. Gary Ind.? Homer AK? Figure out who's a planner in that group, and make some new friends/networking contacts.

In my experience, you can run all over the country applying for planning jobs, but it works better to do targeted marketing in a specific location rather than drop in and be the new planning tech or zoning administrator.

[Michigan is unlimited! I represent that remark!!]

Since this is a post about jobs and planning, I don't feel as bad posting an individual request here. If anyone catches wind of any planning related internships in the GR area (winter 08 or sooner) could you please PM me?

Also...maybe I can get some insight on another related issue. My folks are moving back to Ohio because of my dad's job and if I decide to follow once I graduate I may consider going to either University of Cincinnati for a masters in planning or Ohio State for a masters in lanscape architecture. I just want to know if the money and time I would spend would be worth it in terms of marketability (and salary). I've read that planning jobs and a like are pretty readily available, even for people with only bachelor's degrees.

Speaking of jobs going begging....

a nearby jurisdiction (larger than a twp or city) has been running their usual ad for several weeks. (Grant-writing experience, planning-based. For some reason it appears every couple of months, and has been for several years.) However, the on-line posting is misspelled, which might be impacting the interest level of potential applicants.

Not too many folks out there would consider themselves to be a plammer.

Monster.com sent me this. Can't imagine why they'd have any openings at this time.

ZONING BOARD

Acme Township has several positions available on its Zoning Board of Appeals. The ZBA makes interpretations of the Zoning Ordinance when questions arise, considers requests for variances from ordinance standards, and hears appeals of determinations made by the Zoning Administrator. Meetings are normally held during the evening of the second Thursday of the month. Interested individuals who are residents and registered voters of Acme Township are invited to apply by submitting a letter of interest and resume by Friday, April 4 at 5:00 p.m. to: Wayne J. Kladder, Supervisor Acme Township 6042 Acme Road Williamsburg MI 49690 (231)938-1350 phone (231) 938-1510 fax

So today at work I was handed a bombshell. Must relocate (back) to area from which I left in 2004 if I am to stay with the company. Deadline of six months. Urban planner/project manager/bicycle program specialist with marketing, design, and presentations skills now is afforded the opportunity to make over her life...again.

I could get into grad school. Join the Peace Corps. Buy a vacant lot, move the Perry to it, and become a property manager. Buy up all the foreclosures on my street and play Monopoly. Get a big horn case and become the loudest busker DT. Etc.

Suggestions, comments, and PMs welcome. (Please note that large corporations have web crawlers that find every mention of the company name and immediately drop it into the lap of the exec VPs.)

Haven't any of these companies heard of telecommuting or remote employees? My boss is in Washington, DC while I live/work in Denver. I'm joined by several others in the same situation here and elsewhere all around the country. My agency has saved hundreds of thousands of dollars not having to move staff back and forth around the country (of course, I realize not everyone gets moving expenses reimbursed, but still if folks don't have to move, they are less likely to quit and then cost the company through loss of their knowledge and experience and the cost of hiring someone new). I do work out of an office with other employees of my agency, but none are my direct teammates. Some others work essentially out of their homes.

I don't travel that much either. I connect with coworkers through phone calls and conference calls, email, webcasts, webinars, and videoconferences. It works or we've made it work. And I know my organization is not the only one to have remote employees. If my conservative agency can adapt to new work arrangements, I would think many others could, too.

Welcome to the 21st Century!

It's a control thing. For the several years I've been doing this (again, being vague due to web crawlers), my supervisor has been based in another state. And about half of my work has been on behalf of yet another state.

If you're demoted to the admin level, and told to fill out a time card, the next step is to require you to sit in a cube in the same office as your manager.

Ironically, the job focus is to enhance digital, cutting-edge, modern communication strategies. (There's a reason I keep referring to a certain atrocious building by the S-curve.)
