Wireless computing to become possible in downtown Greensboro park

Action Greensboro sent out requests for proposals Friday afternoon for contractors able to install a wireless fidelity system in the city's new Center Piece Park, allowing wireless Internet access for park users.

"Having wireless fidelity capacity in the park will give us another opportunity to see how citizens want to use the park," said Jon Bell, co-chair of the new park's committee. "Workers may come out of their offices on pretty days for sunshine and computer work, and students and others may seek out the park for a pleasant surrounding to go online."

Action Greensboro's committee to attract and retain young professionals in Greensboro, snerG, is handling the selection of a contractor to install the Wi-Fi system by this summer.

"With Wi-Fi downtown, Greensboro will join other creative and entrepreneurial communities who offer 'hot spots' or Wi-Fi centers for their citizens," said Jenny Stokes, the synerG coordinator. "Wi-Fi hot spots are appealing to young adults who use the Internet routinely to conduct business and communicate with one another."

WI-FI seems to be catching on quickly all over the country. Detroit is going to have all of downtown covered by wireless internet by the end of the year. I think it's great...it gives me yet another reason to go downtown. There are several other cities that are also in the process of putting WI-FI in their downtowns.
