I will be back at the pinecrest at some point this week. We just fired one of our superintendents so my current teacher and who is also the other superintendent will be there at some point this week. Will be nice to get back on this proejct. Been jumping from shockoe hill apartments and John Randolph medical center. Haven’t been back to pinecrest in quite a while.

There are a LOT of really talented folks who post amazing drone photography and video recordings of our fair city on RVA/Reddit. It's a not-so-subtle reminder of just how VERY photogenic a city Richmond really is. She is absolutely drop-dead gorgeous! When I look at downtown and the fog - I can't help but fast-forward my brain a couple of years - (2024 particularly) when we can imagine the top of the CoStar Tower poking out from the fog along with it's older nearby siblings such as the Dominion Tower, the Fed, Truist, Monroe... among others.

As we head into the final month of 2022, here's a quick look at Richmond's official "Crane Collection" - focusing on tower/boom cranes and the stationary mini cranes. (I'm not counting crawler cranes in this particular exercise).

...and no sign of any construction...that I can see anyway.  Hoping the construction gets going in earnest soon!  Great photo though - nice!

The fencing is up and they've had the official ground breaking. Given the depth of pockets involved, I'm not too worried about this one. Wasn't actual "construction" construction not supposed to start until after the first of the year?

Found this on a random Reddit page (not the RVA Reddit site) - it just popped up in my feed. Pretty cool shot of the Hydro (with the Silos off to the left) taken from the south side of South Falls I at ground level. Can't wait to see a similar picture in a few years once Hourigan's two buildings (both the office building and the gorgeous residential tower) are built.

QUESTION: What's the stairwell on the right? (on the south side of the picture) Is that part of the walkway for the Manchester flood wall? (I thought that was on the north side of South Falls)

That stairwell is just a pedestrian bridge across the canal, part of  the  James river park .It was the only way to get across until the the bridge in the background was built.

I forget exactly where I found this - I've had the pix lurking around on my "C" drive for eons and have been meaning to post them. Here's a little something from the "RVA Then and Now" files - a few shots from 1972 when the city was battling the flood waters caused by Tropical Storm Agnes (I vividly remember that event and the flooding, given that I turned 10 years old in 1972) - juxtaposed with RVA in 2022 - and wow, how the city has changed and beefed up in 50 years.

Leading off - E. Broad (around 18th street) looking west toward Broad Street Hill/downtown. Notice in the 1972 flood picture -- the (now) Bank of America Center was under construction and the Fidelity Building stood out in the old Financial District with its distinctive black-and-white stripes. Aside from the obvious change of having the Monroe building, notice how the MCV/VCU area has beefed up - and how the new General Assembly building has changed E. Broad Street at the top of the hill.

PERSONAL NOTE: I remember us getting gas at that Spur station on E. Broad - my dad liked going to that station because they had what he called "cheap gas" - probably a penny or two a gallon cheaper than other stations, if I had to bet. Of course, my dad ALSO complained about how "cheap gas" made the car engine "ping" (lower octane, poorer performance, if I had to guess)...

 

 

 

Up next: an aerial shot from above the (former) Little Oil Company storage tanks and the Maury Street interchange in Manchester, looking north toward downtown. Absent the floodwaters - notice how much the downtown skyline has REALLY beefed up and changed in 50 years - and how Manchester's own skyline - apart and separate from downtown's - is in its infancy (I can't wait to see this same picture in 5 or so years)

 

 

And FINALLY - always one of my favorite vantage points when it comes to enjoying the downtown RVA skyline - a vantage point from above the south end of the Lee Bridge. Again - take away the flood waters and notice how much the core of downtown RVA's skyline has beefed up over the past 50 years. Even though neither picture shows the entirety (west-to-east) of the skyline, it shows enough to demonstrate how much it has grown and changed as 1.) the Financial District has shifted south from E. Main to E. Cary and 2.) the riverfront continues to develop (imagine this picture in a couple of years once the CoStar HQ is complete!)

Humble thanks to@eandsleefor pointing out that today's GGW newsletter contained some awesome RVA pictures this week!

Nice picture of the city from the WTVR sky cam looking east toward downtown. Just after sunset - and the skyline was showing up beautifully. When zooming in - the tower crane at the VCU tech center is kinda sorta barely visible (the resolution really breaks down and gets grainy the more it's zoomed) ... I couldn't make out the Parc View crane - and I don't think the building is visible from this vantage point (too many other buildings on the VCU campus in the way). Also - even though there is a base for a tower crane at the Soda Flats, it doesn't look like any other part of the crane structure has been set in place yet. Hoping to see that rising soon.

Either way - the lighting was perfect and everything came together for a fantastic view of the city.

Can confirm!  The sunset on the city tonight was beautiful. I was driving through on I-95 at about this same time. I snapped some photos while driving through.  There is a tower crane hidden in two of my photos tonight. Can you find it?  Also, The Park was packed when I drove by. Enjoy!

Yes - I've spotted the two pictures with the tower crane     I'll refrain from revealing 1.) the crane & project and 2.) the pictures to let everyone else have a crack at it.
