Yep, Dana, that is the one...well, I think I actually saw some interior design drawings at one point, with all those little courtyards for sculpture....very Fort Worth. But I guess the design (AND location) changed since then.

I am guessing that the rest of the land will go for parking, maybe with some structures for various uses.

Hey, whatever happened to the plan to put a new version of that parabolic house off RIdge Rd. that they tore down (can't remember the name!) on the property as an outside classroom or some such?

I rode my bike out to the Museum Park for the first time (over the big bridge over 440)...

The Polk site was a training area during WWI and it was later used for the youth prison. According to the signs out on the trail, after the new youth prison opened at Butner, in 2000 the General Assembly granted the land to the Dept of Cultural Resources for a museum park. They decided to leave the old smokestack there intentially as an iconic reminder of the site's history.

Goodnight paid $1M for the prison teardown, helped develop the park, and raise money for the for the museum expansion project and endowment.

I think the area next to Wade Ave on Blue Ridge is where the Governor previously wanted to put DENR's new offices, although it looks like they may still go in Green Square downtown.

On the expansion project, you can see the exavation in front of the existing museum near Blue Ridge Rd. I think I would have preferred the expansion on the Polk site, but at least it's being expanded.

It is my understanding that they will use part or all of the old muesum for classroom space? Or other things. IMHO they need to just tear down the old brown brick building,(after the new one is built), and just expand the new glass one...

Last I heard, there was no plans to change or tear down the current Museum building. The new building is an addition.

Although I'd like to see them in City Square, three Plensa pieces will be part of the new NC Museum of Art expansion. It will be good to have "established art" out there and modern art downtown.

I think Lee Hansley's "the city still has mud on its face" and "The state has won; the city has lost" quotes would make a nice addition to the outside of his otherwise non-descript Glenwood space. If this (and the revived F Street) is the city "losing", I hopes it loses a lot more going forward.

So I know this thread has been dormant for a while but it seems to be the newest one directly related to the NC Museum of Art. I went there for the first time in years and was very impressed. I love the use of light within the building, found the folks within to be very nice and helpful and was pleasantly suprised at the price (free lol). One of the buildings was closed for renovation until later on this year so I may have to go back once I hear it's opened up. I still shake my head at the museums location being off Blue Ridge Rd in what feels imo like a virtual no mans land of pedestrian activity but I will say it is easy to get to for most folks in the Triangle. I noticed there were quite a few people out and about on the grounds and perusing the artwork. Here's some pics from today:

I definitely agree that the museum should be elsewhere but you're about it at least having the space for the foot traffic.

I think the interior is set up such that it's difficult to navigate and tell where you're going. When I went it was crowded and I didn't see any signs pointing the direction to different galleries. The rooms all looked the same and didn't seem to have a flow that you could follow and see the whole museum. It's a beautiful place and a lot of really wonderful pieces but it was like walking through a dream lol.
