Basically because Huntsville's economy is based on engineering and science. The vast majority of those jobs reside on the Army Redstone Research Arsenal or on Cummings Research Park. So downtown has only some regional bank offices, lawyers, accountants...

According to Bidclerk, construction on Marketsquare could start as soon as next summer.

Est. Start Date:

Summer 2007

Site work and new construction of a mixed-use development in Huntsville. Preliminary plans call for the demolition of an existing retail building and the construction of a mixed-use development that will include two hotel buildings, restaurants and retail space.

A firm construction timeline has not been established.

I've thought about that, the location is nice for a supercenter but i'm not too sure if there would be enough people living in or around that area to support one IMO.. Then again, it seems like walmarts (supercenters) are known for attracting development and people so maybe "if you build it thet will come"..

DT could probably use a supercenter, just not at Marketsquare...

Sorry to down anyone's hopes for a high-rise building at Marketsquare. From WHNT.

"It will be very exciting," said McLain. "We expect it to be a used mixture development with hotels, offices, and retail, and restaurants and entertainment venues and places to live. As of right now none of that is planned specifically."

But the work is underway. Workers have removed asbestos from the main building, and they've torn down the L.B.J. Auto facility. Demolition on the mall won't start until the lease expires on the only business that remains in Market Square, the Sand Dollar Tanning Salon.

"We won't be doing any demolition till we complete our discussions with that tenant," said McLain. "We will move forward as it makes sense."

McLain says the new development will be a high rise mixture of two- and three-story buildings, with some eight-story buildings.

Looks like some major demolition will be occuring soon. The final outparcel building has been leveled and now it looks like

removal of the asbestos and other interior materials in the main building is underway.

Rebuilding of Heart of Huntsville Drive, and new bridge connecting to the roundabout by the library is also ongoing.

If this project can attract some big time restaurants and retailers ( no reason to think it won't) then it will be awsome.

Demolition is beginning, should be complete by the end of the month. Construction on two hotels,

entertainment, restaurants may begin this summer. The rebuilding of Heart of Huntsville drive to connect with

Monroe at the roundabout is progressing nicely. This will also begin the extensive rework of the creek alongside the VBC.

It will tie in with the canal alongside the Embassy Suite, (A Marriott may be across the creek, one of the two hotels planned)
