Honolulu International Aiport - HNL

Honolulu International Airport (IATA: HNL, ICAO: PHNL) is the principal aviation gateway of the City & County of Honolulu and the State of Hawai'i and identified as one of the busiest airports in the United States.

Opened in March 1927 as John Rodgers Airport, Honolulu International Airport is the principal hub of Hawaiian Airlines and Aloha Airlines, the two largest Hawaii-based airlines. Both airlines offer flights between the various airports of the Hawaiian Islands and also serve the continental United States. Honolulu International Airport is host to major United States and international flagship commercial carriers with direct routes to American, Asian, and Pacific Rim destinations.

Honolulu International Airport has four major runways. The principal runway designated 8R/26L, also known as the Reef Runway, is the world's first major runway constructed entirely offshore. Completed in 1977, the Reef Runway is a designated alternate landing site for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration space shuttle program in association with Hickam Air Force Base, which shares Honolulu International Airport's airfield operations.

In addition to the four paved runways, Honolulu International Airport has two designated offshore runways designated 8W/26W and 4W/22W for use by seaplanes.

Future Plans

On March 24, 2006, Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle unveiled a $2.3 billion modernization program for Honolulu International Airport over a 12-year period. The plan involves implementing short-term projects within the first five years to improve passenger service and increase security and operational efficiencies. These include upgrades to the passenger terminals, ticket counters, baggage screening operations, runways and airport aprons, airport infrastructure such as air conditioning, restroom facilities, elevators, escalators, electrical systems, drains and sprinkler systems.

The new terminal expansions (red) on Honolulu International Airport depicted as part of the $2.3 billion modernization program of the airport in 12 years.

Alaska

Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport - ANC

Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (IATA: ANC, ICAO: PANC) is an airport located four miles (6.4 km) southwest of downtown Anchorage, Alaska, USA. Named after current and long-standing U.S. Senator Ted Stevens, it is a hub for Alaska Airlines (its second largest). The majority of passenger flight operations on Alaska Airlines are to Seattle/Tacoma (average 20 flights per day) and Fairbanks (average 13 flights per day).

Anchorage was a common stopover for passengers flying to East Asia from the 1960s to the 1980s because U.S. and Western European aircraft could not fly over Soviet airspace, and because they did not have the range that modern day aircraft have. Today, many cargo carriers continue to use Anchorage as a trans-Pacific hub as then aircraft can carry more cargo due to having to carry less fuel than on a non-stop flight. Some passenger aircraft still stop at Anchorage on flights between Asia and the eastern United States. It currently ranks as the 4th busiest cargo airport in the world (measured by landed weight), after Memphis, Hong Kong, and Tokyo-Narita.

FedEx and UPS operate major hubs at Anchorage International for cargo heading to and from the Far East. NWA Cargo also operates a major hub at the airport. FedEx's is the largest and can handle as many as 13,400 packages per hour, employing more than 1,200 people and providing a full customs clearance system. UPS's hub handles about 5,000 parcels per hour. Both companies forecast a large growth in traffic over the next several years as trade with China and other Far East countries increases and plan to expand their Anchorage facilities comparatively. The United States Postal Service also operates a large sectional center facility for the 995xx ZIP codes. It processes mail and parcels headed to and from all Alaska cities.

Anchorage is also envisioned as a future connecting point for air traffic to the Russian Far East. Although no flights presently link Anchorage and Russia, there are plans to add flights to Sakhalin in the near future to meet the demands of U.S. oil companies. Anchorage Daily News Some local residents who work on the North Slope of Alaska also fly to and from their jobs in Prudhoe Bay every other week or so from here.

Damn I didn't knew the other Hawaiian airports had so many passengers.

^I acually thought that Maui would be slightly higher than it is because its extremely popular amongst mainlanders and Canadians many of which usually bypass all the other islands.

Maui has two other airports but like the one out in Hana and Kapalua but are mainly served by smaller local airlines.

^It's also expected to increase with in the next year or two by as many as 350,000 people from Australia because Jetstar (based in Australia) will be entering the market i think later this year or next year. I know that tourism from Latin America has been slowly increasing too (especially from Mexico, Brasil, Argentina) but i think that it will be a while before there will be direct flights to Hawaii from that region.

As of 2005 San Juan airport handled more that 10 millions passengers.

boricuaso, well the numbers that i posted for San Juan are for "passenger boardings", i didn't have any numbers for total "passengers handled" for SJ only for the other cities which is the second set of figures.

Thanks for the updates and posting. Is all that stuff in purple the future expansion proposals? Terminal A looks pretty big. BTW its really interesting how the airport is set up with the terminals in the middle of the runways and the path to it under the taxiways.

Theres also talks of a Borders in the mall.

I hope they start the rest of the expansion projects as soon as possible,and more flights at night.

expansions don't seem that big, but it looks like it allowes them to add a bunch more planes.

In this thread there's an aerial picture of the airport and all the new expansions are in purple. There you can see the real size of the new international terminal. PR Ports Authority is even adding a mall to the airport (for a total of aprox. 160 commercial spaces) and 21 new gates.

doesnt seem like it is that big or adding that much, but those are some pretty impressive expansions. Hopefully it stays on track and gets finished.
