Downtown Huntsville

That would a nice addition and draw to Downtown Huntsville considering the place is practically dead after 5PM. Also the economy has taken a toll on most major projects across the nation including the Constellation due to the credit crunch. Until the credit market is better and bonds can be issued then projects like the Constellation will only progress at a snails pace.

On the downtown movie theaters, Birmingham has bee trying to land one for awhile now since independent films practically aren't shown in the Greater Birmingham region after Regal Galleria 10 folded in 2006. Also numerous in the community just want to independent movie theater here so that controversial and non-mainstream ones like Bill Maher's film Religiolous and gay-oriented ones will be seen in Alabama.

The vacant Belk Hudson building on Washington Street will be part of a renovation and infill project that will provide 75 loft apartments in downtown Huntsville. Targeting young professionals, the $11.5 million Belk Hudson Lofts are to be completed in mid-2012. A six-story infill building will be built adjacent to the Belk Hudson building.

Great project for downtown Huntsville, congratulations!

A couple of major projects in the works in the downtown area:

A $70 million mixed-use redevelopment project called CityCentre at Big Spring is scheduled to open in 2016 on the site of the closed Holiday Inn across from Big Spring Park. Phase I of the development will include a boutique hotel, 200 residential units, 31,000 square feet of retail, and 53,000 square feet of office space. If built, Phase II of the project would cost $30 million and add a 130-key urban hotel and 50,000 square feet of commercial and office space.

A $30 million five-story mixed-use development called The Avenue is planned for what is now a public parking lot at the corner of Holmes Ave and Jefferson St. The project will include 193 residential units, 21,000 square feet of street-level restaurant and retail space, and a parking deck. Project completion is expected by mid-2016.

A new site plan for CityCentre at Big Spring was released by the developers a couple of days ago and the development is now being described as a roughly $100 project. The new site plan wraps some residential liner around parking and includes the area previously designated for phase II of the project.

New plan looks a little more urban. Definitely an improvement over the old Holiday Inn and its parking lots.

Just catching up on some news bits.  This was reported back on December 12th, 2018.  It looks like the Madison based brewery, Rocket Republic Brewing, is opening up a downtown Huntsville location as a taproom and brewery.  Reported to be at Meridian Street next to Furniture Factory and AM Booth Lumberyard with 3600 square feet of space and outdoor space.

The company was founded in 2013 and opened the original taproom in Madison at 289 Production Ave.  THe location is just off the airport exit at I-565 and Madison Blvd.  I haven't been to their Madison taproom but have had some of their beer.  The Vapor Trail Cream Ale is pretty tasty!

Reported back on December 3, 2108 of a new $10 million 490-space parking garage on a current city-owned surface lot surround by Holmes Avenue, Greene Street, and Lincoln.  The garage will be 5 levels and is scheduled to begin this month, January 2019, and completed December 2019 (possible into 2020?).  Fortunately, the garage will contain 16, 000 sqft of retail, which looks to front 3 sides, Holmes Ave., Greene St., and Lincoln St.  A small plaza, including streetscape improvements,  will be built at the confluence of Holmes Ave and Lincoln St.  The entrance to the garage is planned to be on Greene St with the exit on Lincoln.

The design looks like a nice fit with some historical buildings in the area, such as the Times Building and 301 East (?).  Also nearby are businesses such as Sip and Below the Radar and residential Belk Hudson Lofts.  The is right on the edge of "downtown" and the Old Town Historic District.
