New England saw a significant decrease in the number of unhealthy air days this summer. Officials attribute the decline to a cooler summer and a decline in smog. The air has improved significantly here since 1983 when the region had 90 unhealthy air days.

Rhode Island 2005 - 8, 2006 - 3

Massachusetts 2005 - 20, 2006 - 11

Connecticut 2005 - 20, 2006 - 13

New Hampshire 2005 - 4, 2006 - 2

Maine 2005 - 4, 2006 - 1

Vermont 2005 - 0, 2006 - 0
