Dram and Draught, an upscale whiskey and cocktail bar in Raleigh is opening a Greensboro location downtown in developer Marty Kotis's entertainment complex in what use to be a gas station many years ago.  A downtown Durham location is also opening.

Brew Peddlers trolley operating in downtown Greensboro. Pretty cool! The trolley with take you to bars and breweries and you can even bring your own alcohol to enjoy on the trolley. Everyone has to pedal. Charlotte, Raleigh, Durham, Asheville and Wilmington  already have this kind of pub transportation and now Greensboro joins them. Several brew stops with more coming.

N & R reports that a developer plans to build 90 residential units at the corner of Gate City Blvd. and Elm St. in downtown Greensboro. This will be a combo of row houses and townhomes.

Bird e scooters are now in downtown Greensboro/UNCG. Last year Greensboro was the first city in the United States to have a dockless bike sharing program when California based Lime Bike launched its first such service in Greensboro.  Now the city has a dockless electric scooter service.  An electric bike sharing service will be coming to Greensboro as well.

Bird e scooter services are in 30 major U.S. cities across the country including Paris, France. Charlotte and Raleigh have the service as well. There is controversy about these scooters across the country in regards to safety. Many people using them aren't wearing helmets and these scooters go up to 15 mph. Lime scooters require a driver's license. It appears Bird scooters launched their program in Greensboro without the city's permission and will likely need a permit to operate. Bird and the city are working things out. Meanwhile you can ride a bird e scooter in Greensboro. However there is a 200 pound weight limit. In addition to bird e scooters, LimeBike will introduce their own e scooters in Greensboro as well as a Lime electric bike program.

Day two of the North Carolina Folk Festival was a success.  Couldn't tell the difference between the National Folk Festival which was held downtown the last 3 years. With the atmosphere, sounds and people, it felt like you were in a big city. 5 stages are spread out around downtown with the smell of food and people everywhere. If you haven't been, check it out tomorrow, the last day. Ranks as one of the state's largest music festivals and has attracted people from all across the state.

Developer Roy Carroll tweets he's thinking about building a downtown convention center. I do know there are talks of building one on the News and Record site across from the Westin. So will he be working with the Westin developer who purchased the site?

Let me guess...The Roy E. Carroll Convention Center.  He's going to have his name in everything downtown:)

He tweeted this a few days ago.

Did they ever make that announcement?

Well one of them which was actually about Carroll's purchase of the Hobbs Street site next to Friendly Center. No idea what he plans to build there which was the site Traders Joe's wanted to open a store until the neighbors ran them off.  But this particular announcement had nothing to do with downtown. But Carroll mentioned a second announcement in his tweet and below it said #downtowngreensboro

Pay wall. But it looks like the developer building the mixed-use project at Union Square University campus is tweaking his plan and adding more apartments along with row homes that will border the southern Greenway loop

Developer Roy Carroll tweeted he will reveal plans for "Carroll at Bellemeade South" in downtown Greensboro within 30 days.

Carroll said it would have several uses. Its expected it will include residential, office/retail and another hotel. I wonder if he'll include a convention center? There is enough land. The development site stretches a block down to Friendly Ave. Carroll tweeted a message about two months ago saying "I'm thinking about building a convention center downtown". Collectively there would be quite a bit of ballpark development. Four apartment complexes, two hotels, retail, a parking deck, two office projects (Project Slugger and Carroll at Bellemeade South) and maybe a convention center. It would be the only place he could build it. He only owns one other site downtown and that's the lot next to his Center Pointe condo highrise which Carroll plans a future tower there (probably for Project 561 when its back on the table) If he builds a convention center, it would be feasible to build a slightly larger hotel maybe around 200 rooms or more. In addition, a convention center on site would also mean we would see a taller residential/hotel project because it would take up quite a bit of land. Guess we will find out within 30 days.

Is Carroll planning to build a new tower in Greensboro?

The Project 561 as originally planned on the site across the street from the ballpark is no more due to the city building its own parking deck. however we still dont know how Carroll has revamped his plans for the site. There could still be some sort of a highrise or midrise but not nearly as tall. He said he would reveal plans within 30 days so that could be anytime now. Carroll has not given up on 561. It just won't be built on that location. When he finally proceeds with those plans it will likely be built next to his Center Pointe tower instead. Carroll designed Center Pointe on the north side of the building with false windows and no balconies so in the future he can build a tower there.

Thanks.  A mid rise was posted on the Charlotte site which they said was supposedly for Greensboro.  I didn’t know those statements were accurate.

I hope so.

Is GB also planning a new convention center?

There has been serious discussions about a convention center. Roy Carroll even said he may build one downtown. If he does it will be built with his planned development across from the ballpark. If he doesn't build one, a developer will likely build one on the News and Record property across the street from the future Westin Hotel. The Westin Hotel developer purchased the News and Record property which could indicate he plans something to compliment the Westin like a convention center. But any such development would likely be mixed-use and include residential, office, retail and perhaps another hotel. With all the new hotels its not a matter of if a convention center gets built. Its a matter of who builds it, where it gets built and when it gets built.
