Firm leases site at airport for Chinook project, will create 60 jobs

Huntsville-based WestWind Technologies Inc. has leased a 61,000-square-foot facility in Jetplex Industrial Park near Huntsville International Airport to house the production of CH-47 Chinook helicopter flight simulators.

The simulator uses software to model flying in a variety of environments, giving pilots every advantage in training and flight experience, safely and cost-effectively.

Plans are to complete the production of the first simulator in January. Already, production efforts have created more than 30 jobs in Madison County, and another 30 job openings are expected as the facility goes into full production, according to a company news release.

LAS VEGAS, Aug. 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Low-cost airline, Allegiant

Air, LLC, a subsidiary of Allegiant Travel Company (Nasdaq: ALGT) today

announced it will establish bases at two new world-class, leisure

destinations: Phoenix-Mesa, Ariz. and Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Flying from America's "favorite" small cities, Allegiant plans to

launch the new service to Phoenix-Mesa Oct. 25 from 13 markets already

served by the carrier.

On Nov. 14, Allegiant will begin nonstop flights to Fort Lauderdale

from 12 markets, 11 of which already enjoy Allegiant's unique brand of

vacation value and convenience.

The first route will be announced and available for purchase Aug. 9 and

all routes will be announced by the end of September. A clock on the

company's website will provide a count down to each new city announcement

and can be viewed at http://www.allegiantair.com.

Allegiant Air unveiled Rockford, Ill., as its first destination for new non-stop flights from Fort Lauderdale.

The Las Vegas-based carrier will begin twice-weekly jet flights on Dec. 14 at introductory prices of $69 each way. Prices will later rise to $89.

Opportunities may open in sea-based missile program

Navy missile defense work coming to Huntsville may open up opportunities in sea-based missile defense programs, a Boeing vice president said Wednesday.

Boeing is transferring work on the kinetic warhead part of the Navy Aegis SM-3 interceptor from Anaheim, Calif., to Huntsville, and 30 jobs will be moved to Boeing's JetPlex site near the Huntsville International Airport, said Debra Rub-Zenko, vice president of Boeing Integrated Missile Defense.

next up, cheaper nonstops to Orlando

Low-fare airline Allegiant Air will launch nonstop flights from Huntsville International Airport to Orlando, starting Nov. 8.

The new nonstop Orlando flights will be three days a week - on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. Flights will leave the Huntsville airport at 3:10 p.m. and arrive at Orlando Sanford International Airport at 5:55 p.m. (all local times).

Flights will leave Orlando at 1:55 p.m. and arrive in Huntsville at 2:35 p.m.

Introductory fares start at $49 each way, when booked at the airline's Web site, www.allegiantair.com. Those tickets must be bought by Sept. 22. After that, regular one-way fares start at $69 one way.

Allegiant flights will be aboard 150-seat, MD-80 series jets.

The Las Vegas-based carrier will start direct flights from Huntsville to Las Vegas on Sept. 21.

It will be interesting to see how this effects the Delta non stops to Orlando International.

United's return helps lift numbers, Peek says

Passenger traffic at Huntsville International Airport climbed nearly 15 percent in August, with 111,653 travelers flying into and out of the airport last month.

"We haven't seen that kind of growth for at least two years," said Rick Tucker, the airport's executive director. "The community is growing and we're offering more services" for air travelers.

United Airlines returned this year with direct flights to Denver International Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport.

"When United came in the market (with the Dulles and Denver flights), it brought in 5,000 seats a month," said Barbie Peek, the airport's marketing director.

Allegiant Air, already providing nonstop service to Las Vegas and planning flights to Orlando starting Nov. 8, announced nonstop jet service to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., from Huntsville beginning Dec. 13. The low-fare carrier will celebrate the service to south Florida with introductory fares as low as $59 each way.

The buildings being constructed on James Record Rd as you approach the airport

a planned two (2) building 204,200 square foot industrial project that is located in Huntsville's Jetplex Industrial Park..

These will be distribution warehouse type buildings.

Also two construction cranes are up at the parking deck expansion.

Number of passengers in September rises 12 percent

Passenger traffic at Huntsville International Airport was up again in September, increasing 12 percent compared to last September.

The number of passengers so far in 2007 - 915,588 - is 5.6 percent higher than at this point in 2006.

Airport director Rick Tucker called September "a great month" for the airport. "We're excited about (traffic) continuing to grow" with some help from low-fare carrier Allegiant Air, which started nonstop jet service to Las Vegas on Sept. 21.

Allegiant will also add direct flights to Orlando starting Nov. 8 and to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., beginning Dec. 13.

"We're expecting to finish up the 2007 year very strong," Tucker said Tuesday at a meeting of the Huntsville-Madison County Airport Authority.

The number of passengers flying into and out of the airport in September was 100,043.

Low-fare airline Allegiant Air starts a direct flight to Orlando, Fla., from Huntsville International Airport on Thursday.

The new nonstop Orlando flights will be three days a week - on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.

Low-cost airline Allegiant Air announced today it will end its much publicized non-stop flights between Huntsville and Las Vegas, citing escalating fuel costs.

The carrier will end its Las Vegas service from Huntsville Dec. 10, according to a company news release. Customers with reservations beyond Dec. 10 will be contacted directly by Allegiant to make new accommodations.

"Unfortunately, due to escalating fuel costs, we will end our Las Vegas service from Huntsville," Maurice J. Gallagher, Allegiant Air president and CEO, said. "We do apologize for any inconvenience this may cause our customers. We greatly appreciate the support the community and the airport's management team have shown us. Our flights to both Orlando and Fort Lauderdale remain unaffected by this announcement."

Allegiant began low-cost service from Huntsville International Airport with nonstop flights to Las Vegas Sept. 21, 2007. Allegiant Air will begin low-cost flights to Orlando Nov. 8 and to Fort Lauderdale Dec. 13., the company said.

Flights could resume if jet fuel prices drop, carrier says

Huntsville is one of six cities losing their Las Vegas flights by the low-fare carrier Allegiant Air.

An Allegiant Air spokeswoman said Monday the airline could consider bringing back the Las Vegas flight to Huntsville if fuel prices improve.

"It's a difficult decision we have to make when we cancel service," said Allegiant spokeswoman Tyri Squyres. "We would not have left the Huntsville market" if not faced with escalating fuel costs.

Jet fuel costs have climbed 50 percent since January - from $1.97 a gallon in the first quarter to about $3 a gallon now, Squyres said.

If prices were to improve, "we would definitely look to" returning the Las Vegas flight to Huntsville, she said. "We will still have service to Orlando and Fort Lauderdale."

$13.16 million deal considered to add 2 wings to airport

Expansion plans at Huntsville International Airport will give passengers and visitors more waiting room, with two new wings featuring 30-foot-high windows for a view of the airfield.

This morning, the Huntsville/Madison County Airport Authority will consider a $13.16 million contract with Hudak & Dawson Construction Co. Inc. in Gadsden for the project.

Work should begin in December to add the two second-floor wings near the connector walkway and security checkpoint. The wing to the west will house the security checkpoint, and the east wing will have a lobby and seating area. "There will be seating for more than 200 people," said Barbie Peek, the airport's marketing director. The renovation will also significantly widen the walkway toward the new wings.

The project will add 14,000 square feet, bringing the amount of public waiting space to 20,000 square feet.

The work is expected to be completed in the summer of 2009.
