I had no idea that the Huntsville airport was such a huge cargo airport until I read this thread and the current issue of Business Alabama magazine. We need to get it hooked up to the Port of Mobile via rail and find a way to get that river port done.

Would it not be simpler just to use the Port of Decatur? I mean, it's already the busiest port town along the Tennessee, and it's facilities are ripe for expansion. It's already got the rail hookup, and everything else. It would save a lot of trouble just to contract out some stuff, and ship it 20 miles SW.

Huntsville airport getting $3.1 million grant for expansion

The Huntsville International Airport is getting a cash infusion of $3.1 million for its expansion and improvement efforts, U.S. Rep. Bud Cramer announced today.

The $3.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation will be used to support the airport's plan to expand its terminal, recondition its taxiway and apron, make security enhancements and buy snow removal equipment, said Cramer, D-Huntsville, in a news release.

"The Huntsville International Airport is a major factor in North Alabama's economic development," Cramer said. "This funding will further enhance our airport as we aggressively recruit quality jobs to the region."

more construction around the airport

More than 350,000 square feet of speculative - no tenants signed - industrial space is being built or soon will be under construction.

That development is in Jetplex Industrial Park and Jetplex Supplier Park, part of the Port of Huntsville. Graham & Company is developing a 208,000-square-foot spec distribution center in the northern part of the industrial park, and Huntsville-based Triad Acquisitions Group is developing a 146,000-square-foot spec warehouse distribution center and a two-story office building in Jetplex North.

In Jetplex Supplier Park, Industrial Properties of the South is building a 42,000-square-foot warehouse distribution building.

Already a top cargo airport, Huntsville is courting more. The airport can handle it without any problem

In an effort to persuade Asian carriers to use Huntsville as a gateway for air cargo in the southeastern United States, Huntsville International Airport officials traveled last month to China to the home offices of seven carriers to make their case.

The meetings with the carrier executives took place May 28-June 1.

Low cost carrier hunting

"Airport passenger traffic in May increased 3.8 percent from a year earlier. January through May, passenger traffic increased 1.8 percent, compared with the same period in 2006.

"United has played a role" in the increasing number of air travelers, said Barbie Peek, the airport's marketing director. United Airlines launched direct flights from Huntsville to Denver International Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport this year.

She told the authority that the airport is hosting in late June representatives of a low-fare carrier that is considering adding new nonstop destinations."

Allegiant Air would be my guess, maybe Frontier which would be great but United's nonstops to Denver probably cooled that possibility.

The more likely candidate is AirTran. It's Atlanta hub with connections to major destinations in the East Coast and the West Coast would be a perfect addition to service at HSV. (Allegiant has limited detinations primarily in FL and Las Vegas.) Also, the current addition of United has led to a decrease in business by Delta and Continental. (See the monthly activity report at the airport's website). Instead what the Airport needs is a low fare carrier which will stimulate additional demand and reduce the number of passengers who presently drive to the Nashville and Birmingham Airports to get lower fares by Southwest.

Another Airtran advantage is they could begin larger jet service to Washington National (the #1 market out of HSV)instead of the present regional jet service. Another major advantage is all of AirTran's flights are on large jets - 717's or 737's. Presently the only service at HSV which is not on regional jets are two flights by American and two by Delta. From an image stand point, if nothing else, the airport officials don't want to be known as only a commuter affiliate destiantion.

It will be interesting to see the results of the meeting with this potential new airline.

The good folks at Panalpina (the people who have the Atlas 747 there at HSV) already work with the people at the China Airlines office here at Nashville International Airport. There is some cooperation between the two believe it or not. The only thing is it's doubtful China Airlines would start service to HSV with their 6 dailies taking place here in Nashville. Plus, that is a dedicated route with one main customer and a bunch of small customers as well here in Nashville. You could see a Air China or a Eva Air though!
