Columbia Bus Barn

Spartan

According to the previously revealed plans, Lady Street would be extended across Huger into the courtyard portion of the development and end at a circular drive at the planned hotel's front entrance. It doesn't really extend the grid per se, but it would create some type of connectivity.

True, but since Columbia's block are so huge as it is, if we want there to be a solid pedestrian network then there has to be a street, or at the very least a plaza of some sort that would allow pedestrians and bikes to get through. That area is definitely not a good place to walk now, but if we don't push for the right things now, then it never will be.

There was some activity on the old bus barn site on Huger today. I noticed a backhoe digging holes in various places. I would assume the soil removal has begun?? According to the state article last july (old bus barn) they had 10 months to complete this project.

I realize it may be time before this land is developed but it sure will look more attractive when totally cleaned up.

There isn't much you can do. It could buried if someone wanted to commit that kind of money. Its not likely though. Growth pressures haven't reached the point where buying it is a reasonable option (and they probably won't). They have planted cedar trees around the one in Downtown Spartanburg. You can still see it, sort of, but they do help.

The city voted a couple months ago to sell the property to fund its $2 million contribution to the CMRTA's interim funding over the next two years. If the property can't be sold at the appraised value or in the required amount of time, they will mortgage the property and use the proceeds to fund the continuation of transit service.
