The best cokes that I have ever had was called a fountain coke and they were sold in drug stores back in the days when coke sold the syrup directly to retailers. They would mix up coke, water and carbon dioxide to make the drink and it was very very good.

This is exactly what I've heard from many of my relatives who grew up in the 50's and 60's. What makes all of the difference to me is the sugar. The only Coke I've ever known contained high fructose corn syrup, and that was fine until I bought a Coke when I was in Santo Domingo about 6 years ago. The Coke's there still contain real sugar, and I tell ya, what I got there pretty much blows the Coke that we have now in the U.S. out of the water.
