Prediction: Something will happen between now and when the Skyhouse starts leasing where this plot of land gets developed (at least starts to).

Briefly back to the Urban Ministry, I think the problem is the same with public housing.  Clearly the best way to avoid negative social impacts on the rest of society is to distribute services around so there is not a massive concentration in one place.  The same goes for public housing, where mixing incomes and moving public units throughout the city avoids some of the crime and allows for them to be a bit more assimilated into the city at large.

 

By having the massive concentration of homeless in one place, we end up with the crime and blight and trashing of a whole area of town making it hard to overcome the stigma.

 

The problem is, no community wants to accept this negative stigma to have new locations move in, so the places that have previously opened the door for it get over run by it from lazy policymakers that don't want to deal with the backlash in new area.  That is why uptown is over run by homeless services and public housing units.  

 

Generally I welcome people of all types, but the problem with homeless and many public housing dwellers is that the social and mental problems that lead them to the bottom of the economic ladder wreak havoc on the communities they inhabit.  Urination, litter, aggressive begging, drug-use, theft, etc.   Spreading these individuals throughout the city reduces the impact of people considering an area scary or blighted, like has been happening for a long time on North Tryon.

Well, you know what, bar districts have their own problems and my point holds, when you ultra-concentrate them, you end up with all those problems magnified, whereas distributing them around softens the impacts on their communities.

In other words maybe Charlotte should look at expanding it's housing first program.

Hospitality Corp seems to be the tenant on the land not a new owner which is the operator of the Days Inn/City inn, which in this termination record seems to be agreeing to end the lease on the land.

Yep. I've watched a few of the other ones go up as well. Shoots up like a weed. They are targeting to have these units ready for lease in Q1/Q2 2015 if I'm not mistaken.

Don't remember if I posted this a couple months ago or not(?), but I had the pleasure of seeing every corner of that motel from the roof, to the crawl space between the rooms, to the closed section along Church st.  They had a # of leaks in the roof that damaged rooms causing them to close those rooms down while they gutted them.  The entire back half of the building facing Church street is closed off because of similar problems that were beyond repair.  If you look at the 2nd floor from Church street, all of those rooms are wide open to the elements and filled with trash and furniture they no longer use.  How this building hasn't been shut down by code violations by now is beyond me.  I can't imagine it's making any money and fully expect it to be gone soon with the recent momentum on N Tryon.

I have actually stayed at this motel. It was back in the early '80s and I was in the 9th grade. We were here for a regional science fair. We noticed several people walking around out at the edge of the parking lot/sidewalk. We went outside our room to stand and watch. About the time we realized who these people were (prostitutes and potential customers) the police drove into the parking lot with lights flashing. We ran back into our room and shut the door. A few seconds later and police officers were knocking on our door. I'm sure they just saw people run into a room and the door slam and thought we were involved in the activities outside. Needless to say, this was the most excitement we had on the science fair trip!
