Wilmington annexed once or twice when i was there 1995-2000. Both times small populations were added 10,000 or so. The thing is that New Hanover county is almost completely urban so even when you leave Wilmington "City Limits" you enever know it...its still city. The City Proper population is now 100,000 the Metro area is: 363,980.

Wilmington is trying to consolidate its goverment with that of New Hanover county. Several times in the past Wilmington and New Hanover have put the consolidation to a vote, always be turned dow by the majority who lived in the unincorparated areas of the county. Ironicaly now the majority of the population is in the city after two annexations in the 1990s. the currrent thinking is instead of merging goverments all at once, they are starting to merge a few services at a time. Starting with smaller departments such as Transportation, water and sewer etc. A few years down the road officals will have to put the issue back on the ballot once most departments have been combined. The big questions will come then. Who will head law enforcement? The sheriff or the Police chief? What will the governing body look like? A city council with 7, 9 or 11 members? Elcected at large or by districts or a combination of the two? Lots to think about, but that is where we are headed here in the near future. With a majority of the residents living in the city now the measure would surley pass.

yes that is true 2006 Fayetteville was 174,000 & soon Fayetteville will annex Fort Bragg & surrounding parts of Spring Lake which would make it about 205,000. Also a developer had his apartment complex approved which will fill in the gap between Fayetteville-Eastover, but don't forget almost 30,000 people are relation because of BRAC so by 2014 will probably be about 230,000. I hope that means we get a new mall & more development along the Cape Fear River!

Its about 350,000 in the MSA, but in a five county stretch Cumberland, Sampson, Hoke, Scotland, Robeson, Southern Harnett co., its about 800,000. Its kind of hard to determine how big Fayetteville stretches as a region, but people I know from Cheraw, SC and Florence sometimes "kick it" in "DA ville".

i just feel that the fayetteville area is like the "neglected child" of north carolina. dont here anything from the other cities of fayetteville unless its something bad. people in the bigger cities or more well known cities always look down on fayetteville like fayetteville is nothing and fayetteville has the 6th highest population in the state, and soon might have 5th challenging the 4th position.

Yeah Fayetteville feel like it is neglected, but with BRAC realignment giving Fort Bragg second power under the Pentagon with the new Command center. Fayetteville will mostly likely grow fast, dense, and entertaining. Also Fayetteville & Cumberland Co., came up with this ideal future of what Fayetteville could look like back in 2002. They called it Greater Fayetteville Futures they came up with a PDF document which talked about a city that had: D.C.-density, Chattanooga-environmental art scene, Richmond metro-Theme Parks, New Orleans: tourist attractions for adults, St. Louis-Commuter Rail, & San Antonio-boat taxi. They have a big imagination huh!!

Wilmington and New Hanover county are starting to talk about consolidating their governments again, if this should happened today Wilmington's population would jump to around 185,000. This will be about the 6 or 7 time that its been discussed and or voted on since the 1940's .
