HartfordTycoon 4 Report post Posted November 15, 2006 Courant Article on Mohegan Sun growth and the gaming economy in general. Since RI didn't want a casino, that means more $$$ for our casinos. It also says the Mohegan expansion is rumored to include a House of Blues. That's pretty cool if true. Courant Casino Article

HartfordTycoon 4 Report post Posted November 16, 2006 I am jelaous of Southeastern CT, I've stayed at the House of Blues Hotel in Chicago, it was amazing. That would be so perfect for Front St. Can the Mohegans take over that project as well?
runawayjim 0 Report post Posted November 16, 2006 frankly, i am surprised that on a site that promotes urbanism that people can get so excited for such sprawling development. while i am more excited about mohegan's developments than foxwoods, they are still both very sprawling and a drain on the nearby cities. i am, personally, very excited that the casino got voted down in RI. it would have been terrible for the state, especially providence. runawayjim 0 Report post Posted November 16, 2006 It does promote Urbanism indeed and we are all supporters of it. However, here in the CT Forums we have a higher percentage of people with capitalistic tendencies, from what I've read. I am one of them to an extent. We like making money in CT what can I say. However, I also think that the Casinos have boosted the region and has helped get Norwich and New London back into the consiousness of the State. Plus there's no other way we would have an MGM Grand and House of Blues coming into the state at the same time. I'm excited about those prospects, I can't even lie. I plan on having a good time down there.

HartfordTycoon 4 Report post Posted November 16, 2006 norwich has been hindered by the casino if anything. i can't say much about new london as i haven't spent as much time there. the casinos promote more monotony in what there is to do. there's going to the casino in that part of the state, unless you're in mystic, which is relatively dead outside of the summer, much like newport. the nightlife and restaurant "scene" is then limited to whatever the casinos decide to offer and you end up in this big box with no outside contact. that's one of the biggest problems with a big casino and the biggest reason they suck people in and keep them there for hours and hours... there's no view of the outside world, it's like nothing else exists but that casino and the restaurants and bars inside it. HartfordTycoon 4 Report post Posted November 16, 2006 with the casino about a 3 mile drive from downtown, why would anyone need downtown with the low class bars? you can go to the casino and have everything you need.
PCGrad02 0 Report post Posted November 16, 2006 None of the bars in downtown Norwich are low class. There are bars that young people go to, and there are bars that older people go to. You could even do a mini pub-crawl, you can even get food at some of the bars, well into the night. There isn't a bar that rivals anything in a bigger city or the casinos, but they are not dives full of drunks. There is constant construction activity in downtown Norwich, new things are going on and opening up every month. Look into the redevelopment of the Wauregan Hotel, we have an Artspace just like Hartford. We have the Spirit of Broadway and Donald Oat for plays and shows. Our library is undergoing a total rehab, very few storefronts are empty. We are one of the poorest cities in the state, but we make do with what we have.
