UNCASVILLE -- The Mohegan Sun casino announced a $740 million expansion plan today that includes as its centerpiece a 43-story hotel. If built, it would be the tallest building in Connecticut, officials said.

The City Place skyscraper in Hartford is 38 stories.

Not sure how I feel about this. But oh well. It's past time for Hartford to get a new tallest anyway. Hopefully that will happen soon too!

I was not contradicting what I said in the RI forum. I was providing firsthand experience that the casinos do little for the towns that surround them. In some ways they help, in some ways they don't. They don't have a night and day positive effect on local cities and towns. In a place like Norwich, there really wasn't anything to draw outsiders into town in the first place. In the above post I was defending my city, it's not completely hopeless here. Yes, I go to the bars @ the Sun, but more often than not, we go out right in downtown Norwich. We also drive to Providence every other weekend to go out up there. I don't think this thread should get off topic, what downtown Norwich has serves the local residents. Thousands of cars pass thru here daily on their way to Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun, people pull over for directions, not to shop or eat something. Many people moved here because we have public transportation directly to the Sun and the Foxwoods lot located in the city. Our public schools have students that speak 30+ different languages. The state of Connecticut needs to step up and give this city its fair and rightful share of the slot revenues. Bridgeport, New Haven and Hartford don't need the money as much as we do, they are not directly affected by the casinos. Having said that, I do believe the Sun is a better neighbor than Foxwoods overall, and the Sun is at a higher level of class. I'm happy to see the Casino expand, I've been to quite a few concerts that would never have been in the area otherwise, and I'm home in five minutes.

i wasn't trying to say that it is. i was living in CT and in college at the time mohegan built the expansion. i remember shortly after i turned 21 that the whole part was relatively new (where the shops and big dome and waterfall are). but i remember one of my friends saying as they were building it that he heard that it was going to be the new tallest building in CT. at the time, i was surprised that the new tallest in the state would be down there as opposed to one of the big cities like new haven or hartford, especially hartford. but i guess that's now going to be the case.

i apologize for using the term "low class bar". i actually meant dive, but i couldn't think of the word, which happens a lot with me. the places i went were dive bars, but they were fun. i actually like downtown norwich. it's got some nice architecture and has a great feel for it. but other than that, there's not much going on. i have friends who used to live in norwich, before they either moved out of state or bought condos in some suburb. only one of them ever went out in norwich, the other 2 swore by the dubliner in mohegan sun (and one of them still does, the other lives in california now). i would've rather gone and hung out downtown with them when i visited, but they were always at the casino. i don't know why, maybe because they usually went out and drank coke and didn't have to pay the $5 a pint.

i would hope that with the new expansion, norwich and the surrounding towns will get a larger percentage of the state's part. they deserve it more than the other towns and cities which aren't as directly affected by the casinos.

i agree that the sun is a much nicer casino than foxwoods and plays the whole themed casino thing (like vegas) much better than foxwoods. the building is also much classier looking. i also think it was built in a better location with easier highway access, which helps keep the casino goers from clogging up the local roads.

was cityplace built before or after the mohegan hotel?

Cityplace is still the tallest in the state at 535ft. I have a hard time believing that the new hotel tower at the Mohegan Sun is going to surpass it. The news media doesn't pay much attention to height - they're idiots when it comes to building heights. If tower A has 38 stories and tower B has 40 stories then they automatically assume tower B is taller. Seeing that the new tower is a hotel, and not an office tower, it most likely won't clip the 535ft mark, but it could come close.

you can see the rendering on the hartford courant website.

i always thought a new building in hartford would eventually pass City Place. We'll see how tall this tower is.

It certainly will be close if they do manage to eclipse CityPlace, no doubt about that. That angled roof that you refered to may very well put it over the top. The recently completed Wynn hotel/casino in vegas is around 45 stories but over 600ft tall (because of a similarly angled roof) whereas the Mandalay bay hotel has almost the same number of floors, but is under 500ft tall. If Mohegan Sun had larger, more detailed renderings I think it would be easy to know the approx. final height, right now it's too difficult to tell based on the renderings.

It is nice to see some height added down in the southeast part of the state but Hartford better regain the tallest building if this one passes cityplace.

Come on all you insurance giants, we all know you want to build a nice new 700 footer downtown! :)
