Back by popular demand, I have updated the Uptown Project Rundown aerial with the latest. Let me know if I missed anything.

It is getting to be hard to keep track of everything.

I left the numbers out of this version, but this list of links is very tedious to manipulate, so I'll leave the numbers this time.

Wow, that's a lot of projects! Good to see Charlotte continuing to develop into an urban center with sophistication. It is always amazing to see all that is going on. It has changed so much just in the last 5 years. I've been seeing the new big highrise going up on the news skycams (or at least I think it is a new building, sometimes its hard to tell). Another big skyscraper will add to its downtown for those who care about them, but I am more likely to enjoy seeing more midrise buildings and townhouses and apartments no more than 5 stories tall. I like human scale so to speak better. I would like to see downtown/uptown Charlotte develop into a tight, compact urban center with many rows of businesses, galleries, shops, restaurants, etc. And also rows of residential buildings in an eclectic blend. However, I hope the development nature of the rest of the city continues as it is the preference of most people to have a lawn and a nice house, etc.

I hope Charlotte keeps on developing and growing.

  • 1 month later...

I went to the Main Public Library downtown today to check out their "Charlotte's Changing Skyline" exibit.

A lot of it is comprised of renderings that we have all seen before, however some of them I had not seen. What I found most impressive was the Animated 3D fly through video of current downtown Charlotte morphing into Charlotte 2010 with all the projected developments phased in over time. This was done by Little Architecture and after watching the animation it gave me the feeling that this place will start to feel like a real city again if everything comes to fruition that is planned. The 3D Animation can be found on the 2nd Floor next to the elevators.

Something else that was very interesting was on the 3rd Floor they have a video produced by WBTV in 1966 titled "Charlotte: Do or Die." It is in black and white and was surreal to see video of downtown Charlotte back then. It really felt like watching a movie on Turner Classics except Charlotte was the background. The content is interesting with an interview of the architect Mr Odell talking about an upcoming bond that would fund the "renewal" of 2nd Ward. Well we all know how that turned out. They also interviewed an econmist about Charlotte and he stated that the city's future was bright because it is in the center of the "Piedmont Industrial Complex"

The exibit is on all floors of the library, mainly close to the elevators. I highly recomend checking it out.
