BTW the sidewalk millage that was talked about oh about a year ago here is some details I got from the city of wyoming. The millage is .15 mills per year. Thats a little more than what the silver line costs. What it provides is clearing of snow of all sidewalks for residents and business during the winter months. The inspections department therefore does not have to inspect properties to see if they are compliant in removing snow off the sidewalk. It also has the benifit of replacing sidewalks. So any sidewalks that are cracked or damaged by trees and called upon by the citizens can get replaced for free. Granted if everybody calls then they will have judge which ones do get replaced and which ones do not. Needless to say its a very good program the city runs. Just to get you an idea for the city of wyoming that provided a revenue of 343,400 for this upcoming year and they plan on spending all but 340 dollars of it for next year. They have about half a years worth of reserve in that fund. Since it has no general fund dollars put into it, all money collected and taken out is in its seperate fund from the general fund. Like many funds in the city it is fully taken care of and is quite sound, (major streets and local streets is a different issue) but the general fund which pays for the police and fire has been kept at the same amount of revenue coming in with costs keep going up. Thats one I will not dwell on here but at least Wyoming is not as bad as shape as Grand Rapids or Walker.

This is nitpicking a bit, but the way I read it (and it's not clearly worded in the quote they used), it said the city spends about $1 million per year on the street lights. But that's still $500,000-600,000 per year that could be spent on repaving more roads, maintaining the parks, or paying the Crime Prevention Co-ordinator who works with all the neighborhood groups (which some were trying to eliminate to reduce the budget).

Well consider that the City of Wyoming is planning on doing the same thing since they can not get any stimulus money for their buildings and as such are looking at cutting half their electricity bill alone. BTW the cost for wyoming is at 900k per year so they figure they would save 450k. But that will not be saved until at minimal of fisical year 2010-2011. The cities run fisical years of July 1st to June 30th.
