U.S. National Whitewater Center

It is kind of sad that we had a record-setting kayaker die recently in NC. In addition to being sad on its own merits, it is also a shame that he won't be able to visit the new Whitewater Center. He would certainly have come to it, and his presense as a famous kayaker would have added a lot.

any updates on this project, their website is about a month and a half behind on their construction update, and I was wondering about the whitewater parkway, the temporary entrance and blah blah blah, how all that stuff was progressing and if anyone had pix or something (I realize this is probably nearly impossible to get to.)

Yep....its on the agenda for this week. They are proposing a compromise that will allow the extension but mandate that is be permenantly closed sometime in 2007.....we'll see if they go for it. Support was sketchy among the commissioners last board meeting.

I got to work at the USNWC today and of course I had my camera so I couldn't resist.

These were all taken today, notice how much more work still needs to be done before they can open. I really dont see them making their deadline. Maybe not having their access road ready won't be a big deal after all.

I'm guessing this is the main facility:

The area is definately getting some really cool additions.

I found out about one project, set to be announced soon. I can't go into many details but the area will most likely see a new BMX, mountain biking, track racing, crit racing, climbing, and whitewater course all combined into a single facility..... and it WON'T be the Whitewater Center that this thread has information about.....

I wish I could say more but I am not allowed. :(

That is awesome news, thanks for sharing. I just hope that it is not a long time before we hear anything.

If we keep on getting more stuff like the USNWC and this project, then the area can become nationally known for outdoor activites and further increase Charlotte's tourism.

Will any hotels start to pop up in this area anytime soon?
