NASCAR has decided no to continue trying to win approval for a new speedway in Staten Island. The track would have been 3/4 of a mile and seated about 75k-80k people.

Apparantly there was so much controversy at a public hearing that a physical confrontation broke out between a council member and some protestors.

NASCAR is still interested, but they have given up hopes on the site on SI that they already own, and are now likely to try to develop.
