Law school mulls move downtown

By KEVIN COLLISON

The Kansas City Star

The UMKC School of Law is being lobbied hard to move to the old U.S. courthouse, which would bring 500 faculty and students downtown.

The law school, now at 500 E. 52nd St. on the University of Missouri-Kansas City's main campus, has emerged as the first choice among potential tenants being pursued for the vacant courthouse at 811 Grand Blvd.

From the Kansas City Star:

Law faculty at UMKC opposes move downtown

By KEVIN COLLISON The Kansas City Star

A proposal to relocate the UMKC School of Law to downtown is overwhelmingly opposed by the faculty, according to the leader of a task force that studied the idea.

Ellen Y. Suni, interim dean at the law school, also said the suggestion to move from the University of Missouri-Kansas City campus to the old U.S. courthouse at 811 Grand Blvd. comes at an awkward time. Her school is in the middle of a multimillion-dollar fund-raising effort to pay for improvements needed at its current building at 500 E. 52nd St. to maintain the school's accreditation.
