Grand Rapids' next signature shot

35 posts in this topic

This has already been mentioned, but I thought it might be interesting to see where you think the next "signature" shot of GR's skyline will be. I think the old one was the picture taken from bridgewater place looking southeast. It was the background at WoodTV and could be found many other places as well. We won't be seeing a new skyline backdrop on the news for a couple years, but when we do, I think the hill overlooking the John Ball neighborhood from I-196 would be it.

I've been wanting to go to that area that you're talking about since I moved here during a big storm. I can only imagine the type of pictures you can get from that vantage point with lightning everywhere

Somewhat related, is anybody with some photographic and Photoshop skills interested in making some wallpapers for our desktops? Essentially I'd like to see some nice wide shots formatted to fit a variety of screens. Personally, I have two 1680 x 1050 screens, so something that would span two screens would be nice. Check this site as an example of what I'm looking for.

That website has a lot of sweet backgrounds. I think I'm getting dual monitors at work soon, so I definitely bookmarked that one. Thanks!

When/If I take any panoramic shots of the skyline, I will be sure to post them in a variety of sizes

I wouldn't mind the next signature shot to look similar to this.

A shot of my 3-D model of DT looking from the S-Curve's north bound lanes just before crossing over the Grand River.

From Left to right are:

The new River House condos (under construction), the JW Marriot (under construction) with the Amway Grand Plaza tower behind, The Plaza Tower

Several times lately I've driven up (north) on the S-curve at night.

Wow. I want to stop and look at the pretty bridges, gleaming buildings, and more!

I say people submit what they think will be the next signature shot by a certain date and then vote on it in a poll.

Cool pictures, interesting creativity, and a little recognition for the best shots... Sounds good to me.

I think standing on the "Cell Tower Building" (the old A&P building) might produce some pretty good shots of the city once Riverhouse is complete.

A GR mug would be something that anyone could make and sell really. I mean, if I had a good skyline shot, I could drive (or walk) to my walgreens and have a mug made for me... Plenty of distributors online for that sort of thing....

Who's going to volunteer to stand on the railing of the s-curve? Not it! :D

I'm probably going to be embarrassed when I found out the answer but I have no idea what or where the old A&P building is. Can anyone enlighten me?

It's that red and white brick building along the S-curve (and just southof it). Very ugly.

Thanks, but I still can't picture it. Maybe I keep my eye on the road like I am supposed to, so I haven't noticed it.

For this vista, go south past the Admiral (?) station at Fulton and 131.

ETA: No, I am not proffering this as the signature shot!

Off topic but, is that the building that the Salvation Army put the over sized kettle on?

6th Gen local must be older than me because I don't remember a salvation army kettle and I don't remember it as the A&P building either. Anyway, thanks for the background info.
