Visions for the Commuter Rail

someone mentioned a downtown loop in hartford. this would probably be best suited to a bus or street car line as opposed to commuter rail. but i do agree that a downtown loop in smaller cities, like hartford, is better than a single center point. the other bus lines can branch off that loop, and obviously the loop would hit the train station.

Pomfret would never go for it. It prefers to be the rural bedroom town. I can't even compare it to anything to the south and west, because Pomfret doesn't really have any resemblance of a commercial center.

A line along Route 6 would serve best, Killingly needs economic help a LOT more than Pomfret. So does (East) Brooklyn, Plainfield, and Putnam.

Hi All, former Connecticut citizen, now in NJ. I am enjoying the various theories on developing commuter rail services and light rail lines throughout the Hartford Metro. If you check out the development of the light rail system throughout Hudson county in NJ, and the many lines in the outer counties in Northern and Central Jersey, you'll find a great example of smart rail development. My complaints are that NJTransit should invest in developing a bullet train system, as we have too many stops.

I am from Enfield and grew up in T-ville. This part of town would do well to develop a transit-oriented village that meets the needs for commuters to both Hartford and Springfield. It is a part of town that is just ready to boom. I sent an email to the mayor encouraging this, as I am sure there will be a train stop in Enfield again. Unfortunately, the town is so full of bureaucracy and red tape that any improvements would be a miracle.

I believe Thompsonville will be a stop on the new ShoreLineNorth commuter rail. I heard that it will be near the Bigelow apartments (the home of the old Bigelow-Sanford Carpet Mills). I hope if Enfield get a stop it would be unique, not an AMSHACK like Windsor Locks has.

Here in Florida, CSX is going to sell an old rail line (in the boondock!) to the regional transit authority for commuter rail. Yes, I said in the Boondocks, but 6 housing developments (with the smallest having 600 homes) will be build in the area in the next few years. The line CSX will be selling is an 10 mile line, but another section of the line (15 miles) is owned by the city of Tampa and the third section of the line (27 miles) is an active line (owned by FPL Group, a utility to send generators, and oil to their power plant and leased by the FGCRRMuseum for their trips.)

I hope ConnDOT will get in gear with RAIL.

Really, the line is not is not abandoned, since the state never authorized the abandonment.

It would be a great route for frieght (CSO to connect with NEC, P&W to connect their Hartford lines to the rest of their lines) and passenger service...(the Pequots and Mohegans could run trains from BDL to the casinos, Commuter rail and AMTRAK)

The state tore down the stone arch bridge over rte 316 10 years ago and still haven't built a replacement for pedestrians on the trail, that new bridge was supposed to be completed like 5 years ago.I'm sorry to say but none of the abandoned lines will carry commuters in this NIMBY state ever again.

But let's suppose a commuter rail gets built along I-384. Why would I see it being routed northward from Manchester towards the more populated Vernon instead of going towards Bolton?

And why can I not see this line extended into Tolland or Willimantic?

go to vernon and then back down. nothing says it has to go straight along the highway...

i don't know why you can't see it extended to tolland or willi (you should, at the very least, see it extended to willi and perhaps down to norwich, up to putnam, or across to plainfield if not all the way to providence).
