Wow, a few people posted Detroit interchanges, but nobody posted the Mixing Bowl (I-96, I-696, I-275, M5 interchange) in Novi, Mich.:

Also, speaking of 4-layer interchanges, here is the old Marquette Interchange (I-94, I-43) in downtown Milwaukee, Wisc:

Definitely a 4-stack. possibly 5, replete with an old factory smack in the center! It is currently being replaced with a friendlier interchange:

Interstate 64 and 77 in downtown Charleston, West Virginia. It is a three-level directional interchange that was completed in 1974. See the page I authored for more photographs and information. The interchange features high-speed ramps from all directions, and passes over US 119, making it a four-level interchange in reality. It also crosses over the Elk River and a now-defunct railroad, and has a partial interchange with US 60. Piers extend from the river to the ground and even in buildings!

The Interstate 64/77 interchange at WV 114 is impressive as a three-level diamond interchange. Part of the northbound lanes cantaliver and then are raised by ~50 feet above the southbound lanes for a period, and provide the backdrop for the Capitol building.

The Interstate 64/US 119 Fort Hill project required the demolition of more than 1,000 homes on the south bank of the Kanawha River. The Fort Hill project, named for the hill that lies behind the US 119 (Corridor G) interchange, became one of the largest earth-moving projects on the North American continent up to that point.

This one was just constructed a while ago north of Eau Claire, WI (a city of about 70,000). In terms of design it is rather unremarkable. What I find shocking is its scale. For an intersection between 2 controlled access highways it sure takes up a LOT of land:

Unfortunately, or fortunately depending upon perspective, my hometown of Minneapolis and new town of Charlotte do not really inspire when it comes to interchange design. We've sure got our share of design problems (bottlenecks, commons, etc) but that is a matter for another thread.

The SPUI near the Trumbull Mall: Merritt Parkway at Route 111

And the fun thing about that one is... downtown Hartford is on the left side. The entire downtown area is the size of the interchange.

At the present, NC doesnt have the number of interesting interchanges as a state with our population would suggest... but that will be changing in the coming months and years with the completion of Charlotte's outerbelt and Greensboro's urban loop. As of right now these are some interesting ones, at least for NC :shades:

I-95, Route 1, Route 128 - Lynnfield, MA

I-787, Route 9/Route 20 - Albany, NY

I-787 - Albany, NY, the next exit north

I-787, I-90 - Albany, NY.

The left stack was designed for a cross-town expressway that was never built, thus being so large.

I-95, I-295, I-278, I-678 - Bronx, NY

I-95, I-87, Route 1 - New York, NY.

This is much more impressive in person because the ramps are jutting out over giant cliffs. above the river.

Here're some of the more interesting interchanges in Alabama.

Here's the one with Interstate 565/Memorial Parkway (US 432/231)/Washington St./Jefferson St in Huntsvillef.

Here's the one known as Malfunction Junction to us. It looks really organized above, but, it seems impossible to navigate when you're driving through it. The sides of the interstate literally reverse as you fly over opposing traffic on Interstate 65 and Interstate 20/59 located in Birmingham.

Most of our's aren't too complicated, but, the interchange with I-65 and Future I-22 that's going to be built will be enourmous.

A few pics from the mainline I-15 of the spaghetti bowl in Vegas. These are not bad but the tallest flyover which connects the 15 to the 95 is getting retrofitted with another lane and it clogs northbound traffic at rush hour.
