Since I seem to represent Colorado Springs here, LOL, I'll try to keep dicussions related to the city in this thread so that I'm not starting new threads every day.

Newsblab.com reports that the small retail building on the Southeast corner of Wahsatch and Pikes Peak has been demolished. A 4-Story office condo project, to be occupied by Pueblo Bank and Trust, will go in its place.

I would imagine Pueblo Bank & Trust will be vacating it's current downtown location in a 4 or 5-Story office building at Bijou and Cascade, however with downtown office space in high demand, I'm sure it will be snatched up quickly.

This is a somewhat sad story in the sense that Ralphs Barber Shop had been a downtown institution for decades, and was forced out when the buildings owner decided to re-develop. Thus far I have not seen a rendering of the new structure.

More good news on the local employment front, though I find it interesting... if you follow business news on a day to day basis like I do, it seems like it's constant mixed messages. The Gazette seems to run articles that contradict itself on a day to day basis... still... good news is good news.

The Colorado Springs metro area may be getting two new suburban cities in the next few years. The as yet unincorporated cities of Black Forest and Falcon north and northeast of the city are both working on incorporation. The group behind plans to incorporate Black Forest now have a website.

Great pictures. I haven't been downtown in over a month due to an injury, and this is the first time I've seen the CC projects under construction. The first picture is obviously the Fine Arts Center expansion, but what is that thing across the street? Is that Cornerstone Arts Center?

The only time I ever saw a rendering of that parking structure was the day city council approved it's construction, I watched the council meeting on SpringsTV and renderings were presented to council. The rendering I saw looked very much like an office building... anyway... you might be able to find a rendering if you spend some time looking around www.springsgov.com

Some recent goings on...

A large new project for the southwest part of downtown Colorado Springs was announced this week, it's to be called "Citygate." Demolition is ongoing at the future site of Pikes Peak Place, unfortunately no timetable for construction has been set out and the lot will be used for parking until construction begins. This makes me nervous. Cooper Tower is still on course to break ground in the 4th quarter of this year, though. I'd like to throw www.toiletpaperonline.com out there for anyone interested in Colorado Springs, it's a great site lol. A few downtown business owners frequent the site and have pointed out that all of the speculative construction downtown is forcing rents through the roof and local independent businesses, out of business. Not good. These developers better put their money where their mouth is, lest we end up with downtown worse off than it was.

Express Jet to add NON stop Colorado Springs flights into California.

I don't know anything about the airport there in CS, but it's going to get a little easier to travel for you all. Express Jet is adding flights in and out of the city. What is current situation at the airport? Is it growing? Obviously getting busier.

KRDO's story.

It would be wonderful if the auditorium got the updates it needs, but I'm afraid funding may be a problem if the private sector doesn't step up. Also, the parks and recs department runs the facility right now and they've had a recent history of shutting down concerts claiming they are going to be raves, and include drugs... what's the point in updating the venue if the city isn't going to allow it to be used?

As punishment for the optimism I've been feeling lately, this was posted on SSP today.

Ok - I have learned this week from sources VERY close to the two new mid-rise projects slated for downtown Colorado Springs that plans are cooling rapidly!

RDS has revised Cooper tower to be only 18 stories. They are holding off on submitting any additional plans or construction drawings to the city until this summer, which will give them time to evaluate the local economy. The sad part is that the original proposal per Ray's request was 32 + stories and 4-6 stories of underground parking!!! That would have been an amazing addition to the downtown...

Norwood has officially (and quietly) SCRAPPED plans for their twin towers which were supposed to be built downtown where the current domilition is taking place. Nor'Wood ecountered a problem with their architect when they submitted plans showing 14' + tall floorplates which drastically put them over budget. They will finish demolition of the lots and keep the property fenced while they evaluate constructing a parking structure. They have also tentatively contracted with an architectural firm in Denver which will handle any work on a FUTURE tower - they have no plans to move forward on the tower in the immediate future.

Sorry for the bad news guys....But, what else can we expect from a city that has no true economic environment???

that's a real bummer! let's hope this guys source is full of crap! incidentally, i've often thought that a downtown colorado springs dense with 12 to 18 story towers would be really nice. then, maybe one 350 to 400 footer at the center to finish it off. here's hoping! :rolleyes:

at least the two redevelopment projects downtown are still a go. i would be more dissapointed if those fell through.

You mean Citygate and around America the Beautiful Park?

What downtown really needs is density in the form of blocks and blocks of 4-6 story buildings, with a combination of residential, commercial, and art space... a few 15 - 20 story office towers here and there and we'd be good to go.
