Yep. Of course there's also the Statehouse dome, the Babcock building dome, the Strom Thurmond complex dome, and the dome coming with the new Greek Orthodox church on Main. If a new county courthouse gets built, I hope that one will have a dome as well.

I've never thought about it, but thats so true. Domes are classic and attractive features. Are they thinking about building a new county courthouse?

Last I heard they are. I sure hope if they do that it's built away from Main. That would open up a nice parcel for a significant development that could potentially bring some life and activity to Main, particularly that side.

haha I am only 19 years old. This was like way back in 1995-96 when I use to come to SC and vist my grandmother seeing it from I-77 and Charlotte was just awarded them

but seriously, I remember as a little kid coming to Columbia, and the only thing that really sticks out is the Bull Street dome. And when ever anyone asks about Columbia that thing always seems to come up in conversations.

You're talking about the Babcock building cupola (dome)? If it's an icon now, it will REALLY be one once the Bull Street development is complete.

I remember coming to Columbia as a kid and the Babcock Dome, The State House, and that weird Hydrant ?Sculpture?. The train tressel along I-126 also sticks out in my mind.

Also, as politically incorrect as it may be, the term "Bull St." and it's connotations.

It was built in 1968. So I guess Capt. Worley saw it being excavated in 1967 or so. (Sorry to date you, Cap'n!)

Whenever I would be coming back to school, I would look for the Blue in the sky: Southtrust Tower. Whenever I saw that, I knew I wasn't far.

Also, Williams Brice Stadium is an icon. As a child, on our way to various parts of NC, I always knew we were in Columbia b/c of the stadium.

The Gervais Street Bridge, AKA the Congaree River Bridge, graces the cover of Columbia's new phone book coming out next month. I guess that's verification that it's a Columbia icon.

AND back on topic. I think Innovista will be a future icon for Columbia. Hopefully it will be one on a scale on national recognition.
