When Gene Desjarlais dropped his daughter Emily off for junior high basketball practice in November 2002, he got a surprise.

The soccer and basketball teams were both practicing in the same tiny gym at Hanshew Middle School.

Desjarlais asked the coach why.

Not enough space, came the reply.

What a shame, Desjarlais thought.

Then the 49-year-old subcontractor had an idea. By spring, that idea will become the largest indoor sports facility in Alaska -- a cavernous, air-supported sports dome in South Anchorage that could change the landscape of Alaska sports by providing a warm, dry place to play during long, cold winters.

What will it be like?
