Charleston Works: Tradition

Tradition was the bedrock of society, the birthright of Charleston's people, the priceless inheritance that no carpetbagger or soldier could steal. It was made manifest in the Market. Outsiders could shop there, it was public property. But they found it frustrating. Somehow they could never quite catch the eye of the woman who was selling vegetables, the man selling crabs. Black citizens were as proudly Charlestonian as white ones. When the foreigners left, the whole Market rang with laughter. The Market was for Charleston's people only." -Alexandra Ripley,Scarlett - The Sequel to Margaret Mitchell's Gone With the Wind.

In a CHARLESTON double-house and on a long piazza overlooking red-tin rooftops, there is a possibility of no end to summer in the city when it should be autumn.

There are many stories itching to be told over about each sun-bleached house and its occupants and the second Yankee invasion ...

CHARLES TOWN BECOMES CHARLESTON

Picture
Charleston Visitor's Center, Mary Street
In 1663, King Charles II granted Carolina to eight English nobleman called lords proprietors.  In 1669, the proprietors sent settlers to America. The settlers arrived in 1670 and set up South Carolina's first permanent white settlement at Albemarle Point in West Ashley.   In 1680 the colonists moved to Oyster Point on the peninsula and named the settlement Charles Town.  The spelling was changed to Charleston in 1783.

By the mid-18th century, Charleston had become a successful trade center, bringing in goods from the mainland, Europe, and the northern ports it had become the center of the trade for the southeastern colonies.

By 1770 Charleston was the fourth largest port in the colonies following Boston, New York and Philadelphia and became the wealthiest and largest city south of Philadelphia.

WoW!   Charleston :tw_heart: looks good.  In the 3rd photo I recognize  Midtown's super growth and old Piggly Wiggly, which I used to enjoy visiting just to hear the person calling out the daily specials on the speakers and  us laughing in the aisles at whatever 'oddities' he said...
