Vic, Charleston is unbelievable. I finally decided to be a tourist and do Fort Sumter. It rained! But I loved it...We were all soaking wet and learned so much I didn't know like I didn't know about the Garrison, that black structure built in 1890 in back of the fort to protect Charleston during the Spanish-American War. After that it served as a Communication Center during World  War 2. Charleston was so important back then, it had three forts to guide this rich city as it was then from attack...British attack and desire they all expected.  An amazing sight and great view of Charleston from the observation deck. I also touched the handprint of slave, perhaps my own ancestor, who built the bricks for the plantations and fort sumter and I felt how sad he must have felt all this fuss over a Southern Right that didn't include himself...Me and the ranger discovered. Strangely enough she had never seen it until we both noticed it in the rain... It was one of the best time I ever had with a bunch sweet hunky Southern boys in all of Carolina...Nice.

The area in which Colonial Lake sits was established for public use in 1768 by an Act of the Commons House of Assembly.   Colonial Lake evolved from a pond that would not come into existence until 1869 complete with the wide walkways and picturesque promenade  now for well over a century.
