North Boulevard Town Square

Hmmm....what point was that? That he's embarrased by the residents of BR who don't like living near drug addicts or porn shops?

Older downtown areas that have been woven into the city's fabric are more important to addicts and bums. Downtown provides an area where they can bum money from the many people, they have many places to sleep, tourists are usually more willing to give money, and shelters are typically located near downtown. Thats why I thought he made a good point. Don't get me wrong, I don't think we should necessarily invite them into downtown but he was saying that its not uncommon to see these people living and using downtown.

To those referring to the "ugly metal thing" or "big metal wavy circle thing", that is actually a rendering of a contemporary take on a public stage. This rendering was done by a local architecture firm. I'm surprised to see that they were not mentioned by name. Probably because as of this time, I understand that this stage is not part of the Town Square's budget but is rather a proposal of what could be done at Galvez Plaza.

As for the success of "big metal wavy circle" things, check out the success of Cloud Gate in Chicago, better known as "The Bean". Sounds familiar, right? That's because it's consistently ranks in the top 5 of tourist attractions in Chicago and is one of the most recognizable images of the city.

Exactly my point.

you're comparing the Bean to the big metal circle that's proposed for Baton Rouge?

Really?

"Big metal wavy thing".

I agree with most, that is probably the only part of the whole project that needs significant redesign. I realize there is a very low bar for public art in this country, but we can do better than that.

Some uncreative person is making a fortune off of this...

The structure isn't exactly my favorite, but i definitely find the shape and materiality interesting. My only suggestion would be to "cover" the void in the middle of the stage, to either provide some sort of shade or weather protection for the performers, it could be an opaque glass or canvas. Just a thought.

I do believe that this stage and new town square are a step in the right direction!wink.gif

Okay "itsjustme2"....Why don't you put your extensive knowledge of Baton Rouge to good use? Why don't you spend some time sketching, or modeling your ideas in Sketchup, for a new stage. Instead of standing on the soap box, maybe you could do something more constructive with your time instead of just complaining.tongue.gif

You know what, you're right. I'm going to stop voicing my opinion and just bow down to everyone elses opinion because they think they're right. I completely agree now..that Big metal circle is BEAUTIFUL and thought provoking.

But why stop there?

How about we all wear red armbands and call ourselves the United Republic of Socialist Urban Planet while were at it?

/sarcasm

itsjustme2:

Your not voicing your opinion, you are simply complaining with out offering a construction solution or critique. Antrell asked,"What would make the structure better exactly? People complain but don't offer solutions." Instead of offering a creative solution, your response was, "Hmmmm...how about something that looks good?"

Its fine if you don't like it, the majority of architecture is subjective anyway, however, you didn't offer a solution, but only continued to stifle debate and complain.

Then, when someone, I, calls you out for trolling the forum, you respond with an overly sarcastic response, only further validating my statements about your poor attitude.

Try blogging on Skyscraperpage.com, its pretty obvious to everyone here, and me, that your comments are not respected, nor welcome.

you're incorrect. I AM voicing my opinions. It's not my fault you don't like it. I suggest you stop reading my opinions if you are that upset.

Do you not know how to have a friendly conversation or debate with someone, especially via the internet? This isn't the comments section of the Advocate, where you can simply post negative inflammatory comments, because no one knows who you really are. Everyone on Urban Planet has a reputation and a distinct personality, and we all try to remain extremely cordial and polite, even if we do fundamentally disagree.

If you are going to remain an active and vocal participant of this forum, I strongly suggest you tone down your rhetoric, and try to be more constructive, instead of being so sarcastic and tearing everyone else's opinion down. We could then again return to having a much more engaging and "fun" conversation over the interests that we all share.

Have a great day!thumbsup.gif

1) you ask me do I know how to have a friendly conversation and in the previous message above you called me a troll? You're just slinging the name calling. Something I haven't done.

2) like I said earlier, if you don't like my opinions then how about you just ignore reading them. That way everyones happy.

Thanks

I suppose you are unfamiliar with the internet slang term "trolling?"

In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into a desired emotional response[1]

I hate to get into internet squabbles, but I must admit, ItsJustMe2, some of your comments do tend to sway towards the, ummm, brash side. Maybe if you tried to post milder more constructive comments, instead of knocking things so boldly, things would be more pleasant. :)

Hmmmm...how about something that looks good?

Something contructive would have been better. And since you quoted my post, I have a reason to read your opinion.

I'm pretty sure I am the youngest active member for Louisiana and pardon my language but you are presenting yourself rather immature bickering with people you have never met, nor do you post many informative, positive, or even neutral posts.

I'm sorry to join this argument...
