New home building plummets

Detroit #2

Looks like the city is doing well, if I remember correctly, Detroit's housing starts last year also ranked well within the metro.

Do these include condos? Or is it just single family homes?

I think this is done by newly constructed units, but I'm not sure. I've never been able to get an answer to this, but do renovations of say historic buildings count as "new housing starts?"

They don't. New housing starts are just what it sounds like. A permit to start the construction of a new housing unit. (I'm sure that this includes condos and apartments.)

I ask because transforming a former warehouse not used for residential use is, indeed, a new housing start. Just because one is constructed on land, and one in an existing property shouldn't change that. Thanks for answering that, though. It puts things into better perspective.
