I know this is dependant on how match play goes, but if this happens it really would be great exposure for Winston-Salem and the Triad. For this to happen the U.S. needs to be the Czechs. Let's keep our fingers crossed that everything pans out for this wonderful opportunity!

i remember this from back in '01. the W-S Arts Council really got involved with promotion and marketing. i remember seeing tennis rackets decorated all over downtown. hope all works out!

I think Winston-Salem should focus on attracting more pro tennis events. Greensboro has PGA golf. I think Winston could host those professional tennis matches like Wimbledon. Maybe we could one day see a tennis stadium in downtown Winston-Salem.

This is great exposure b/c you'll have the #2 player in the world there.

Also, W-S is hosting the first rounds of the NCAAs in March.

Flow indicated some years ago that he would like to get W-S on the pro circuit, and to build a tennis stadium downtown. It is slow going as there are rarely new slots on the circuit, but if anyone can do, I reckon he can?

The Davis Cup Match is sold out at the Joel!

If you're downtown our just about Winston-Salem, look out for the "Whacky Rackets", wooden tennis racket replicas painted up by local artists and groups. They will also be on display at the Joel during the match.

Just a tidbit of information about this weekends Davis Cup Matches:

-the sell-out crowd of over 14K will be the highest attended Davis Cup Event in the USA in 15 years and the 3rd highest attended event in Davis Cup History!!!

-the upper decks of the Joel were not to be opened for this event, but with over 11K tickets sold on the first day of ticket sales, this decision was changed.

-this event also sold-out in record time for the Davis Cup.

Some of this I'm sure is speaking to who will be at the event for both teams as the world's #2 (Rafael Nadal) and #3 (Andy Roddick)players plus the world's top rated doubles team (Bob and Mike Bryan.) But, I definitely think this speaks well for how Winston-Salem has pulled together so far in pulling off this event!

with the success of the Davis Cup, again Don Flow has his sights on bigger and better things for the city. Currently, he's making a pitch to land a yearly week long tennis event that would require building a tennis complex with clay courts. some of you may remeber his proposal for something simlar a few years ago. sadly, that one was proposed for downtown while this new one is envisioned to be part of the LJVM complex.

The complex would include one stadium, to be built near the fairgrounds grandstand, plus one grandstand court and four side courts. The ATP requires six courts for a tournament.

"Our goal is to build a permanent facility, and it would be multi-purpose and could be used for tennis, music and other opportunities during the course of the year," Flow said.

we may get the finals, it is between Winston-Salem and Portland, Oregon. Its kinda wierd how little Winston-Salem is in the running for this with Portland
