found this interesting story,

Indiana Ranks 3rd in Nation for Black Homocides what's the deal with that? I'm not sure what it means Other states on the list have a more noteable black population. Michigan, Pennsylvania, California to name a few. Not that it has to much to do with it, but is racism an issue there?

Not sure why we rank so high, aside from the dire straight of the African-American community in Gary pushing up the numbers. Sure Indy, Evansville, and some other locals have significant populations, but I don't think any have the social and crime issues found in Gary. Thats just my thoughts on what may be the causes. I am more familar with Gary than the other cities, so other forumers may be able to contribute more information about the issues in other Indiana cities as it relates to this question.

It could be Gary. But gary doesn't have that big of an impact on the over all Indiana population. I mean it's population is just barely over 100k. Or is it under 100k yet? You know, the city of Gary isn't very old either. It went way south way quick. Are there any nice parts of Gary? Any bright spots for it's future

Maybe we should start a "Gary" thread

Gary's population is about 102,000. I heard it has some nice buildings but loads of abandonment. I would love to see someone's photos of Gary.

The murder rate in Gary has been fairly high ever since I can remember, so I'm sure it is contributing to the state-wide statistic, unfortunately. Just check Gary out at city data and compare it with other cities in Indiana and across the country (murder rate per 100,000). You'll see that it's roughly 4x the typical average.

haha Jacko, Gary's most famous resident. Maybe that's part of the reason it's in such bad shape. Imagine what he could have done if he were only a philantrophist and not a wack job

There's a road trip for you ZachariahDaMan...I know how you love exploring abandoned buildings. Perhaps you could convince seicer to drive up from Kentucky...he's into the abandoned building exploration, too, from what I've read.

that would be cool. Although, abandoned buildings tend to freak me out.

Indiana's Governor has been on a kick of privatizing government services and assets since taking office. Toll roads, social services, etc. That might be interesting to talk about.

He is currently talking about privatizing the state lottery and allowing the construction of a private toll road around Indianapolis.

What the hell does Indianapolis need with an outer beltway, much less one that is a toll road? *scratches head* I say invest the same in mass transit initiatives (light rail, commuter trains, etc.) and there's no call for it.

It might releave traffic, but how does it affect here in central Indy? Those bucks should be spent on the light rail, trolleys, etc. That fudgein road will only cuase more sprawl.

AT&T today said it will make a "major new jobs announcement" on Tuesday morning at the Indiana Statehouse.

The telecommunications company said the jobs will be located in Indianapolis, but wouldn't say much else. Gov. Mitch Daniels, Mayor Bart Peterson and AT&T Indiana President George Fleetwood will attend the news conference

I think we just need to keep working at ways to keep the conversation going. I live so far away and don't know that much about it. I'm good for fluff, but if you have some solid things you'd like to share or good photos do it up!

I too live outside of the state and its media markets, so I just get bits and pieces out of the major online media outlets when I scan them from time to time. I do happen to have some photos from my trip to Indy this summer I can probably get posted in the next few days. I'll get to work on that tonight maybe. :)

In Michigan City the Blue Chip Casino is starting to break ground on a 22 story hotel complete with a large convention center. The news paper there is called the News Dispatch and you can enter a screen name and a password to view the past newspaper articles without having to get a subscription. Search for the hotel from past articles and a artist drawing of the hotel is available. Also look for MC to begin a large downtown redevelopment project. The city has been purchasing lots of property to provide a large consoladated land mass to make a corridor to move people from the casino to the downtown Franklin Square, Light House Place Outlet Mall and to the Lake Michigan shore (Washington Park). I would look for this project to transition Michigan City into a large detination town for day trippers out of Chicago.

Good for Michigan City. I was there this past summer and thought the city was very nice and full of potential.

I think Michigan City definitely could be developed into a day tripper destination for Chicago residents; heck, the majority of the plates downtown were from Illinios when I was there. So I think with this development the city should be well on its way to improving its drawing power and redeveloping its downtown area further.
