New arena in Fort Worth

Ed Bass, chairman of the Fort Worth Stock Show Rodeo, is campaigning for a new arena to be built to replace the 70 year old Will Rogers Coliseum. New facilities in Oklahoma City, San Antonio, and Houston are drawing horse shows and rodeos, as well as there revenue, away from Fort Worth. The minor league hockey team also opted not to play this season rather than play at Will Rogers.

The new arena envisioned by Bass would be around 12,000 seats and be able to host a multitude of events including rodeo's hockey, and concerts. It does not appear that there are any formal studies for a new facility planned by the city at this time.

There is another arena that is part of the convention center. It seats about 11,000 for events such as concerts where seats can be set up on the floor. But, it is much less for events that take place on the arena floor. For example the Fort Worth Flyers (NBA D-League) only have a seating capacity of about 4,500.

Also keep in mind that Bass is only stating what he envisions for the arena. This may or may not jive with what the city wants. I also thought that number was pretty low and think that they could easily support a 15,000 seat arena.
