Hyatt Hotel proposal

From the article, the city is planning three phases with this development, essentially. They're rubber stamping the Dallas project, which has been in the works for over a year now, to open a Hyatt (hopefully) key anchor hotel two blocks down from the convention center, south of the site by two blocks. After they accept this project they open up the bidding to other developers to build another anchor/HQ hotel on the existing parking lot on the opposite end of the Convention Center, basically building bookend hotels. Third, they're soliciting plans for private development for the Dome site, and making the entire swath of 19th St a pedestrian corridor, but without having to ferry conventioneers back and forth from the Dome site. So two hotels, towers, with a private entertainment destination for the Dome site and linking the three together with a pedestrian corridor.

Ok, now I see how it lays out. The hotels would be in line with and back to the police and fire stations (the small parking lots between 19th and 18th). If Wareing's folds into the development and redevelops or sells his property for a hotel, then the proposal would stretch from Cypress to just past Parks. The big convention center parking lots that stretch between 19th and 17th and west of Parks would remain untouched.

We got the Reader's Digest version of the Briefing at today's RAC meeting.

1. First of all, Sun Rise (who I liked) pulled out months ago.

2. Next up: the proposal goes to the VBDA. If they approve under PPEA, it starts the clock for other proposals. Legally it's 60 days, but some City Council members want 90 days.

3. After that period, Council chooses a partner -if any- from all proposals.

4. On height, the developer can go to 200 feet under the land's RT-3 zoning.

5. Location: southeast of the convention center, on the parking lot just across 19th Street.

FYI, the RAC Strategic Planning Meeting will be January 16 from 2-5 P.M. at a location to be determined.
