Well, I've only visited Israel twice in my life for business reasons but the official language is Hebrew and is the most common as well. Arabic is the minority language in the same way Spanish is in the United States. English is the most commonly used besides Hebrew, I would say. I read somewhere that some very few people in the Northern region actually speak Aramaic, which is similar to Hebrew I believe.

Oh yes. I forgot about the Russian Jew exodus from Soviet Russia during the cold war.

How much is English used in Israel? It is common enough that one would not need to learn Hebrew?

I would say so. Almost everybody there learns English as a secondary language after Hebrew.

Israeli Jews should learn to speak Arabic in school and Israeli Arabs should learn Hebrew in school. It would help somewhat in making Israeli Jews feel closer to Israeli Arabs and hopefully make Israeli Arabs feel like they have more of a stake in Israel.

Israeli kids have to study English, Hebrew from 4th grade. In 6th grade they must add another language and most public schools give you the options of arabic/french. which you must study until 10th grade, and you may choose to continue your studies until 12th grade.

Most Israeli Arabs do speak hebrew, just because they have to intaract with Israelis all day.

6.5 million speak Hebrew (inc. israeli arabs) 1.5 million people speak russian. 2.5 million speak arabic (inc. 1.3 million israeli arabs) 0.8-1 million speak french. 5 million speak English

What's up with the 1.5 Million Russian?

Is it because of the Orthodox Church, or is there just a big population of Russians in Isreali?
