Folks, urban living has hit Fuquay!

Akins spent $2.5 million constructing Varina Station, a 20,000-square-foot building that opened recently along the southwest side of Broad Street in downtown Fuquay-Varina. The building is Akins' attempt to create a pedestrian-friendly area mixing apartment living with retail shops and restaurants.

Mentions he hopes to capitalize on students and workers from nearby Campbell University and perhaps the future Novartis Plant in Holly Springs.

I wouldn't exactly say Campbell is "nearby" but rather near enough. I'm a '02 grad. It's still about 25 mins away from here. In any case, this is another excellent project that shows how small towns can greatly improve their historic downtowns while keeping the "mayberry" feel.

imo Varina is the cooler half of Fuquay-Varina anyway....I could certainly see a transit stop here oneday with more projects like this built up around it.

It's vertical mixed-use. Hurrah!

Does APex, Holly Springs, or Knightdale have even one building like this? Or has Fuquay just leap-frogged all of them?

apex has a few small-scale buildings, but i think they've all been leapfrogged.
