The Live Oak in Ally Charlotte Center Plaza appears to need intensive care - then again, maybe it's just early in its adjustment to a new environment

I feel like they should have just gotten a tree locally instead of trying to create this statement piece with a live Oak (as beautiful as they are) that had to be transferred from over three hours away. I think this one will eventually break the concrete from how they grow (if it even survives). I think another type of tree would have been just fine. I mean it’s not like people will be laying or sitting under it anyway.

The video wall in Tryon Place is so cool! Got asked what was I in there for and I said “checking it out ;)” and kept walking!! Lol

the tree is stressed of course but I think it should be fine and I would give it a year.  It still has some leaves on it which is a good sign.  But more dirt is being pushed around it not sure what they are doing. 

Still a great development.   The most watched tree in a city of Trees.

Main Street in Carborro is hardly Tryon Street, but the live oaks in this "urban" setting (i.e., in a concrete plaza next to a street) bode well for the Ally live oak.

Just posted this in the Moxy thread, but the JW Marriott appears to have opening on August 18th.  Per the Marriott website.

Man, I still think JW could have made a killing with the top level of that parking deck (at least half of it) and turned it into outdoor event space.  Weddings, work events, etc.  Similar to what the Grand Bohemian did on their "rooftop" outdoor event space.  JW, being a very high end full service hotel, I would have imagined event space like that would be booked in a heart beat.  Also, I just think tops of parking decks are ugly and developers don't use enough creativity to make them useful other than a handful of projects (DEC green roof, Skyhouse's Parking amenity deck, Dimensional Place in South End, etc). I am looking forward to this project opening though...much needed high end hotel added to Uptown.

Just noticed the open area between the Ally Center and the JW Parking Garage has wooden slats covering over the parking level.  Looks pretty nice.

The Grand Bohemian’s outdoor space was originally planned to be a pool, something the JW has.

Overall I give this project an A-.   The only thing I dont like about it no retail facing College but other than that I like the look, the retail, the plaza, the landscaping and the tower design.   Great job Crescent now lets get on to your next high rise (and I know you have one cooking on the back burner LOL )

I mentioned the landscaping but no photo so here is one on the College St side.  I give this project and whole block an A+ for landscaping especially with the live oak.

Ally has purchased this office building from Crescent for $390mm.

Should allow Crescent some spare change to move on to their next project.

Interesting that Ally chose to purchase this building, but not their HQ in Detroit (which I believe is owned by Dan Gilbert, founder of Quicken Loans)

Live oak update.  still looks stressed but alive and still doing some work around the roots of it.   Around the Ally Bank Center, the plaza, the JW Marriott today.

Crew is working on adding the covering over the tree again, so hopefully this is good news that our tree will survive. Also misc photo of the plaza

Up close and personal with the live oak tree and I do see new leaves popping out.  It was severely stressed moving from the lowcountry to uptown but I do think it will make it.  Has not really lost any more leaves and young sprouts.  Today and still saw football fans roaming around from Georgia.  

Retail tenants looking good.  any word on the other spaces as at one point they had them all leased or close to it before the pandemic.  Little patio for the ramen place there and the Golden Cow signage looks good.
